Buy another LS1 or Not
Hello everyone I currently own a 2002 WS6 and a 2000 Trans Am. My wife and I made the mistake of buying a 2005 Cobalt SS thinking it would be a semi fast fun car that gets good gas milage and do ok in the snow. Well I found out that Chevy made the SS's with some gay 5X110 lug pattern and snow rims are expensive and just decided to get a beater for the winter so now we have 3 cars that sit in the garage for the winter and to tell you the truth I would rather have another LS1 instead of the cobalt. So I am looking at a 2002 WS6 A4 with 152K on it for 8,995 now I know thats a ton of miles but I have done atleast 5-10 motor and tranny swap in my two cars as well as the all my friends F-bodys so pulling the motor and tranny and swapping in a forged and built will be no problem. So what do you guys think keep the cobalt or go for the WS6. Another thing to keep in mind is we willl be rolling 3-5K into the WS6 off the cobalt as well so the price of the WS6 will be around 12-14K.

I have been trying to do that for a while but we are just too upside down in it. We owe almost 19K on it and I would be lucky if I could sell it for 14-15K but I was thinking I would rather be way upside down in an LS1 then the cobalt but then again the WS6 has a ton of miles but I don't think it would be a car we would be trying to get rid of anytime soon

id sell the cobalt, roll 2 cars for a bit and then look for something half decent with lower miles so you wont have to sink a ton of money into one with high miles to rebuild the motor and trans

I'd sell the cobalt for what I could, recover from that debt, and then go LS1 searching...

Just buy the snow tires man. You dont need another car like that to sit in the garage. Im sure you say that you would use it in the snow but when it comes down to it you probably wont want to. Just my opinion.

Also look into those ugly looking black steal wheels there pretty cheap. Or put them on the wheels you have on the car now and then one day buy a new set of summer wheels when you can afford it.

Would never try to drive a LS1 in the snow not something I would want to try. My 02 has never seen the snow and never will. As far as the snow wheels right now atleast no one I found has steelies for that bolt pattern and the wheels on there are 18" and I am sure 18" snow tires are expensive. Having a winter car is no issue I have a 95 Monte Carlo and the wife has a 97 Bonneville to drive it all comes down to keep the cobalt as a summer car or trade it away for the WS6. Looks like everyone thinks keeping the cobalt or try to sell it and then buy a LS1 is the best choice but I know no one will pay 19K for the cobalt so I think 3-4K would have to come out of my pocket to pay the cobalt off for the buyer to have the title so I guess keeping the cobalt and paying it down and then when we are not so upside down trade it in but then again the value of the cobalt is dropping like rain falling from the sky lol

Sell the Cobalt, get another LS1. I'm planning to buy another one soon too. I've already got a '98 Z (garage queen) and a '02 Z (nice weather driver), and I'm looking to add another that I recently found. My wife daily drives a '96 Bonneville, and I've got an '04 Cavalier for the shitty weather. Nothing wrong with having 5 cars!

why not get a v6, you can get them dirt cheap with way less miles on them! In new jersey they are selling a 2000 firebird with 74000 miles for 3500! So thats something i would think about if i was in your situatation!

I have been in similar position several years usually with my wife's SUV, but got off under that last year when I sold her 00 Expedition and paid everything off before buying the current one.
Never going back to that circle anymore.

I would sell the Cobalt privately, when I had the cash to cover the difference between what you could sell it for and what you owe. It sounds like the car is doing you no good, and is just sitting there. I understand your thoughts, might as well have a car that you know you will like. After the sale of the Cobalt I would look for my next f-body.
Although if you were still thinking of trading and financing the entire sum on the WS6 you found, I would get a gap insurance policy. Your bank/credit union can offer one to you as well as the dealer that you may be buying from. Gap insurance is great in your situation. It is an insurance policy that covers the difference between what you owe and the true value of your car in the event that it is totaled. It's cheap too.

and right now is the best time to buy a 4x4 because everyone is selling them because thye dont need them bc winter is over now. theyre bringing their sportscars out of the garage.
buy a 4x4 that runs and is ugly as crap bc it serves it purpose and who cares about the body and if so fix it up. boyfriend bought a 94 s10 blazer manual for $200, used it for winter, fixed it up for about $600 (body work, paint, interior) and sold it making money

No offense, but this seems like a dumb idea.
Snow tires are too expensive, but it's okay to roll 3-5k into another car?
Just find a set of stock steelies for snows for the Cobalt, they shouldn't be too hard to find. It's almost April anyway, so now you have all summer to find them.
And if you want a winter beater, get a Jeep Cherokee. They're all over the place, and are dirt cheap.
Paying 12-15k for a car with 150k is nuts, especially as you already have 2 of them.
