Its in the LS family. It has a iron block with aluminum heads. Not a LS1 which is 5.7. Just a smaller version of the LS1. I think its called a LQ something.

they do have aluminum 5.3s wich i believe is called an lm7, and the two iron blocks flex fuel and the regular are l59 and l33. i dont think the flexfuel is any different besides fuel systems which has larger injectors, different fuel rails etc.....

there deffinately worth working with. Alot of people use them and the lq9 6.0L iron blocks when they want a supercharged or turbocharged setup

i wanna build a desent turbo engine for street truck, with a decent size turbo.

so can you use ls1 heads and fuel systems and all that?

how much do u have to punch it out to make it a real ls1?

what HP are u wanting to make?

It is definitly LS, regardless of the fast that it isn't an LSx designation. Cams, heads, cranks, etc are all interchangeable. It's already the same stroke as an LS1, so you just need the LS1 bore of 3.89x. When honed an LS1 can safely go just a HAIR more than the 5.3 though, don't go past 3.903

If you do not already have the block I would go with one of the Lq iron blocks the are 4.000" same stroke and can be punched .030 to build a 370 turbo motor. the crank and covers are still interchangeable

Correct. The 5.3L is an LM7. There are 2 different types of 6.0L in a chevy truck/gm truck. The LQ9 which is in my truck 364ci only in Silverado SS & Vortec Max & Denali or the LQ4 which is in 2500 series with just a little lower compression. BTW, these engines are great for making power. If you're looking for more info on truck builds, check out performancetrucks.net (this sister site). Good luck to ya.

No love at all for the screamer, devilishly short-stroke, 4.8L LR4, huh guys? I'd like to see someone take the "baby" motor, keep the stock stroke, but bore it out, making it even more oversquare... It'd be something like ~3.90 X 3.2x...

I don't know if that would be feasible or not, but I love engines with significantly larger bores than strokes....*dons flame suit*

It's very possible.
I bought a foxbody mustang with no other purpose than to do an LS swap. stock stroke 4.8, LS1 bore = 312ci of high revving fun I was contemplating the Callies shorter stroke crank to build an LS302 out of it to be a smartass with an LSx 5.0 in my mustang. Final plans aren't decided yet, but it will likely have a 4.8 crank in a 6.0 block for 328ci, or a callies crank in a 4.8 block for 301.99ci

I say go for the 302 It would be funny to see the look on peoples faces when you tell em the engine is a 5.0; "It's just a H/C bolt-on 5.0 foxbody" You wouldn't be lying
