what is my best engine option?
what would it take to build a reliable 500 hp ls1 that gets 20 mpg highway?
would it just be cheaper / easier to buy a crate ls3 (LS376/480 EFI LS3 Gen IV V-8) for $8,928.57 from gm performance parts. i know i would have a bit of work to do and i would need to buy the ecu, wiring harness, and an accel pedal
so which would be my cheaper more realistic option? if you support building up the ls1 what would be the best way to do it?
or do you have a different option that would be better?
thanks in advance

Stock block, patriot stage 2.5 heads, LSX 92 mm intake and your choice of cam from Speed Inc. My dad's friend just drove his 200 plus miles home from speed inc. cruising at 70 in 6th with no issues. He also had a little fun in Schaumberg between stop lights. Dynoed at 425 and change rwhp. Oh, and got 34.5 mpg overall on the way home.

500 rwhp can be done on a stock ls1 with a large cam, excellent flowing heads, and all the bolt ons (LT headers, true duals, fast 90/90 combo, etc). However, it will be hard on your engine components. Another option would be to go larger CI with say a 402 ls2 stroker as someone above mentioned, an L92 stroker, or even a LSx block based 427. These engine choices above with a good sized cam, good flowing heads, and the proper intake/tb/exhaust setup will get you there. Finally, the best option IMO would be to go FI with say a procharger d1sc kit from Exotic Performance Plus. You can hit 500 rwhp on 8psi on a stock shortblock and be fairly reliable. Then when your engine finally lets go or you decide to upgrade to a forged shortblock then you will be able to up the boost and exceed your 500 rwhp goal. Hope that helps!
