WARNING-To those of you who use the extended oil filter on your LS1

I have used the oversized oil filter on my LS1 for years. I liked the extra capacity it provided me. yes, it hangs an inch or so below your oil pan. I used to tell people.."If you bottom out enough to hit your oil filter you have bigger issues". Well, this is just not the case. To make a very long story short, I hit a manhole cover in the middle of a street down the shore and tore my oil filter off spraying oil everywhere and almost leaving me stranded 200 miles from home. Needless to say I'm going back to the stock LS1 filter!

No damage to the engine. I shut it down just as the pressure guage reached 0. The filter was a K&N and it certainly sits lower than the pan. After getting a new filter and filling the car with oil I drove it home 120 miles. I took it to redline once to so I think the engine is fine.

That has to be one hell of a unique situation. I've driven over large speedbumps, contruction roads, heavy snow and ice and as it stands my headers WILL hit the ground first before the oil filter. It'd take one of those 1 in a million chance that the wheels will be placed in such a way that the k member and the headers will be missed and the "object" hitting it will go after the oil filter.

That's a freak deal for sure! I also run the k&n long filter, the bottom of the nut hangs about 3/8" below the header primaries.....never had any problems. Probably smarter to run a wix instead of k&n (no nut on filter) to make the headers the lowest point. Glad you caught it in time!

its not a one in a million by any means. if you live near back roads that have a high crown in the middle of the road its pretty normal for this to happen. i used to run the longer truck filter, but the price is about double on that filter so i run the stock filter number on my car and use it on the truck too. yeah im cheap........ change it on time every time you will be fine with any filter unless your running really high pressure.

Well, kinda. I mean no, officially it is not lowered but I weigh like 285 and had 3 other people in the car. Probably close to 700 lbs in total. ![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)
Keep in mind the K&N I used to run is the longer K&N not the standard K&N for the LS1. The standard K&N does not extend down past the oil pan.
