Default Wierd Noise under the hood in the Morning

Hi,

I have a 1998 Z28 and the area where the pulleys are for the belt i have a squeeky noise every morning when i start the car. It seems to go away after 10 min of driving. Could it be a pulley that needs some lube? I can be in the car driving and still hear it echo of the side of another car so its pretty annoying. It is a brand new belt i had put on a few months back.

Thanks for your help

i had a similar problem, and it ended up being my alternator pulley. Take your belt off and spin all the pulleys individually to see which one it is.

DO NOT put WD-40 on your pulleys. It will damage your belts, and then the residual oil will damage your new belt.

Your problem is one of the pulleys. Now you just have to I.D. which one.

I would also like to know why wd 40 would damage the belt, also if i take this to the mechanic, what will be the solution? Do i have to buy a new pulley? or do they just lube it up? thanks

WD-40 is fine on belts http://www.wd40.com/faqs/#q8 but...

In general, the only thing WD-40 is really helpful for on a car is dissolving rust. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40 Its a penetrating lubricant and will dissolve other oils/greases. It is a lubricant, which is good, but it doesn't stand up to much and will wear down very quickly.

So, if you use WD-40 for lubrication, you'll find it will work OK initially but will wear away quickly and will either make your problem worse or cause you to go back often to re-lubricate.

For light duty (hinges, etc.) you should use an oil formulated for the purpose and for heavy duty (pullies, bearings, etc.) you should use a heavier grease.

If you search through the threads on this site, I recall seeing a good write up somewhere on how to re-pack the idler pully with grease and fix the squeaking problem.

I just read the WD-40 article. My mistake, I guess it's o.k. I assumed WD-40 had oil in it since it's a lubricant. Oil turns rubber into a black gooey mush.
