These things are cheap to replace. On the other hand, using some throttle cleaner to clean the thing out worked pretty well. The light when off anyways.

the pics above are exactly what you need to do,
i had p1416 tripping over the past year,

cleaning them doesn't always work, what will happen is the heat hardens the rubber'ish gasket in there and the check valve doesn't flow enough air and throws the code. There was nothing to clean in mine, I've been having the code like 10 times the past 1-2 years, would just clear it and it would come back in a few months. You won't hurt anything by not replacing the check valve, it is an emissions part so you will fail emissions if you have this code set.

as far as i know autozone has the air pump check valve cheapest at $13 each, and they are unpainted aluminum. Any place else is $40 or more. You should replace both driver and passenger side.

you will need to remove the air pipe the valve is threaded to, the air pipe will unbolt off the exhaust manifold on each side, hopefully fairly easy with a 10mm socket. then undo the plastic clamp and rubber hose off the other side of the check valve. I needed two pipe wrenches to get the check valve off the air pipe. Use some antiseize on the threads of the air pipe threads before screwing the check valve onto it, and on the bolts holding the air pipe to exhaust manifold

I replaced both sides. I got one at Advance Auto Parts and the other at Autozone; both were under $15.00 each. I placed a rag under each valve and soaked them really well with PB BLASTER and let them sit for about15-20 minutes. I used two adjustable wrenches and removed both without taking the entire pipe off! Be careful while taking the plastic clamp off the hoses and hang onto the clamp, then pull the hoses off each valve. Make sure you are turning the correct way (make sure you're loosening, not tightening) and be careful to keep the wrench thats on the pipe straight, to keep the pipe from bending. When you're installing the new valves...put a good bit of anti-seize paste on the threads to make it easier in the future.

I have a few of these if you'd like one for the cost of shipping.

undo the metal tube from the exhaust manifold,
then on a work bench in a vise clamp it and use a pipe wrench with leverage to unscrew the check valve from the tube.
the little metal exhaust gasket that goes between the tube and manifold you can get at a gm dealer part counter, bring the tube with you.

I tried changing the ones on my pewter z several times (even w/ gm ones) and they would throw a code after a few weeks... so I eventually ended up scrapping the whole system. My green z doesn't seem to have the same problem. Hope you have better luck than I did.

get an obd2 reader and manually clear the SES light.
otherwise it typically takes 3 full warm up cool down cycles before the computer does self tests and if your new check valve was the fix the computer will turn off the SES light.
