Default Is there ANY way to make our stock water temp gauge work...

...just as the title says.

Is there a way? That'd free up my A-pillar for another gauge when I start putting them in.

Thanks

maybe you could hook the stock guage w. to an aftermarket sender...? or you could swap a TA dash into you Z, and put some gauges in the airvents.

what other gauges do you have in you a pillar?

You can sell your car and get a 98. That's how I'd fix it.

On a serious note. I'm not sure if the stuff is actually in the pcm or of it's the gauge itself. You could swap gauges, or get a granetellie 200mph , and I suppose you could change out the temp sensor. I'm not sure what exactly hinders the 99+ temp gauges.

i think it could be the sender and the gauge. i put a new gauge in the car and its reading lower than the computer is by a few deg. i like to have it cause then if im driving i donthave to have the computer hooked up to get a true reading, or better than that gauge at least

I've heard all the storys about how these gauges are in-accurate. Finally I installed a mechanical Autometer gauge set including a water temp gauge. I decided to leave the factory gauge hooked up as well and you wanna know what I found out ? That the factory gauge works just fine. I can tell exactly what my mechanical gauge is going to read by looking at the factory gauge every time. I don't know who started the rumor that they don't work, but they DO.

So you're saying your car runs at 210 all the time?

Well actually I have a 160* T-stat which keeps my car running at 174-180* During open road racing and some track days I've seen water temps up to 220-225 and the factory gauge is always dead nuts on. Even when my car is stone cold I can follow both gauges as the car warms up and the factory gauge works great. Not quite as accurate as the Autometer, but within a few degrees.I've verified this 100's of times and now that I'm on my 2nd Autometer gauge ( the first one went bad ) I've verified it with 2 differant gauges. The factory gauge works FINE

the stock 98 guage is very accurate. Basically add 10* to whatever its saying and you've got your temp.

It wouldn't be as simple as a sensor swap, the 98's are a 3 wire and also have a different(retarded) pcm.

I got a question about the stock guage, on my '00 ws6 as soon as I put my car on the temp goes right in between 210 and the bottom number, and it doesnt move at all and it goes there even if the car hasnt been on for hours, does the guage acutally work, cuz I would like to know what temp my car runs at.

it only moves when you first start the car, until operating temp, and it will stay there unless you over heat

Well when I put the 160* thermostat in my pewter car, 01 model, and changed the fan settings the needle did the same thing, didn't read ANY lower than before, but the TECHII said it was running 182* in town on the highway, whereever. So I am with the guys that say it works as it warms up, but goes to a preset spot, which seems to be a bit before 210, and unless it starts to get hott it doesn't change. I was expecting my gauge to read lower with the new thermosat but it didn't. At least it ran cooler.

well I was saying my gauge doesn't move at all, it stays in the middle line between the bottom number and 210, if my car sits all night and I start it in the morning the guage is in the same exact spot and doesnt move, I have yet to see the needle move at all, is the temp sender bad?

In your case, something isn't right. It should start at the lowest temp when you crank it cold and slowly go up to about 210 and level off. I've always heard that GM got a lot of complaints about the temp swings on the 98 cars as they fans cycle the temps cycle a lot also, so the 99 and later they changed it so that the guage stays about the same and doesn't cycle up and down.

Does anyone know if the stock sending unit can be unpluged without any problems or trouble lights on the 99 and newer cars? I want to put a new sender in the stock location and then mount a small 3/4" x 1" digital readout over the top of the factory gauge.
