Sup fellas, recently hit 45k on the odometer. I'm going to do the recommended maintanence, but I'm considering changing oils. I've tried for a while to obtain the German Castrol, but it just isn't available in Hawaii, and I have tried buying from members here, but shipping pretty much makes it ridiculous. So, here are my options:

Stay with Mobil1 5w-30
Switch to Mobil1 0w-40
Switch to Redline 5w-30 or 0w-40
Switch to Royal Purple 5w-30 or 0w-40
Switch to Amsoil 5w-30 or 0w-40

I'm actually leaning more towards 0w-40 since temps here hardly drop below 70 degrees, but let me know what you think.

No GC listed which would be my first choice but a close second for Amsoil and Redline.

If you car is completely stock does that matter as far as the oil goes. I am thinking about using the amsoil but their website made it seem like it was more for race cars.

Amsoil works fine in a stock car.

Redline does not make a 0w40, they make a 5w40 though.

Amsoil's 0w40 is not for cars, it's a snowmobile/ATV oil, but they also have a 5w40 which is for cars.

why do you guys use 0-40 or 5-40 or even 10-40 .... ?? i use royal purple 5w-30.

Whats the difference in grade ??

Wow, no offense but RP 5W-30 is WAAAAYYY thin for the LS1. I think tests have shown it to be much closer to a 20 weight oil at temperature. The LS1 likes a true 30-40 weight oil at temperature. If you really want to use RP switch to the racing 41 formula.

If 5W-30 is way too thin for the LS1 then why does GM recommend it in the owners manual ?

I'd say Mobil 1 5W-30 is your best bet

Since it never gets below 70 there is no need for a 0w product the first number of 0w30 for example is what the consistency flows like on a cold engine. The lower the number the closer to water like flow it is the higher the closer to honey.

In your climate a 15w45 or 15w50 would be fine also remember the larger the variance in the digits i.e. 0w20 vs. 0w50 the larger amount of additives are in the oil to create the viscosity changes, which isnt always a good thing. I personally run a 0w-30 Mobil one from October to March since it is colder then a 10w40 in the warmer months Apr-Sept.

The manufacturer recommends this 5w30 because it is more emissions friendly and in the beginning of the motors life the engine is tighter than it is after time.

all oils are not created equally. In the case of oil 5w30 of one brand is not necessarily the same true weight of another.

I live just off the coast in southeast texas... and i've always preferred dino oil. I ran dino 10w30 in my stock shotblock motor for 4 years until a nitrous backfire took out a piston. I now run dino 10w40 in my 408. I'm just not into the synthetic hype.

GM recommends changing your plugs at 100k miles too. If you believe that I have some cheap land in Florida I can sell you.

As said above not all oils are created equal. The LS1 likes a TRUE 30 weight oil at temperature. They even like oils more towards 40 weight. Oils like M1 5W-30 and Royal Purple 5W-30 are closer to 20 weight oils than 30 at temperature according to oil test results I've seen.

RP 5w-30 I personally would NEVER use in any car again as I bought some planning to use it in my Z and found this site before using it. Not to waste it I used it in my wife’s car. Oil pressure dropped right away and after a couple of hundred miles I changed it out and oil pressure rose again.

OK, Why? Please share what this suggestion is based on? I like facts before I use a certain oil not suggestions based on personal opinion. "If the masses use something it must be good" does not compute in my mind. I highly suggest heading over to bobistheoilguy.com and read through the threads before giving others information on what oil to use in their LS1 with no basis in fact.

I don't mean to be a dick about this and this is not just directed at you but I keep seeing this same suggestion over and over again and it's really not based on any tests. M1 5W-30 is probably a good oil in a lot of cars just not the LS1. It's your car so use whatever oil you want but a lot of new people come here to find out the best oil for their LSx car and they would read through some of these oil threads and think M1 5W-30 is the best oil and they would be wrong.

NEVER EVER use a 50 weight oil in your LS1 is my suggestion. That oil is WAY too thick for an LS1. Using a 0W-30 is not a big deal. It just gives better protection on cold start up it is not going to hurt your engine in a warm climate. Do you need to run a 0W? No but it won't hurt either. The one thing you say that I do agree with is that if you insist on running M1 the 10w-40 is far superior to the 5W-30 for an LSx engine. I pretty much disagree with everything else you said but I don't have any energy left to argue.

Thank you for all your votes and feedback everyone. I've decided to stick with Mobil1 5w-30 for my specific application, daily driving/Hawaii weather.
