Default Descreen or don't descreen

Is it worth any extra HP or better flow to descreen the maf on a ls1? I noticed these don't snap out like the lt1's did so I didn't want to mess anything up by smashing this one out. Any thoughts? Bad idea?

This topic has been discussed MANY times!

In my opinion, it's not worth it. Many people have done it though, and have not had an issue with it. I've seen a couple of things on my MAF screen that the air filter has not caught so I look at it as a final filter before it goes any further. It's your call.

Here is just one thread out of the many about this topic.https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...g-you-maf.html

I took the screen off of my LS1 and I've never had any problems with it. It sounds different when I rev it up though... you hear alot more suction if you will...

I think its up to you. I have been running descreened for 2 years. No issues at all. But since the previous owner did it I have no idea if it did anything.

I was going to do this until I looked at it and seen the screen had caught a bug or two, some pine needles, and one of those little helicopter things that fall off trees.

bump stop mod doesn't worn either right?
or ram air kits?

if you believe pulling an obstuctuon from the intake path doesn't help maybe putting one in like a tornado will help?

all the little stuff adds up

Not gonna say it won't help, but I wouldn't do it. Something could make its way to the MAF. Without the screen it will go right through. Not a good situation.
People have found all kinds of stuff on the screen. Bugs, twigs, etc..

several respected opinions have claimed it can conflict with the MAF calibration/tune

only way this can happen is a huge hole in your air filter or it is not sealed up correctly...I bet at least 30% of the people who use a lid have bypass on the backside of it...it needs an extra strip of thick weatherstripping to seal it up nicely to the air filter...

removing the screen will help but it can tweak the tune so it should be adjusted or done before a tune, just like getting an 85mm maf to replace a stocker...

Oh there are "gains" to be had from de-screening, the guy in this thread...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/texas-mem...yed-motor.html

...Gained a bolt into his motor that would have been stopped by the screen if he had one.

A stock screened maf will only flow about 800cfm if I remember correctly, as a descreened maf can flow over 1000cfm. Food for thought. And this thread has been started WAY to many times. It's the same every single time, half say do it, half say don't do it.

Come to think of it. I have been wondering if it's worth it to descreen your maf or not. I think I'll make a thread about it next week...

Wow, really? I guess sense I am speed density I should put a stupid *** screen in the bellows or something to stop things an air filter is designed and used for.

If you're speed density then obviously that's a different story, but seriously, read that thread I posted... a bolt from the guy's aftermarket air intake came out and got sucked through the MAF and into his engine. Thanks but I'll keep my screen in!

My car's my daily driver, and I am not rich enough to replace a blown motor because something stupid like that happens. I'm just sayin. Why would cost-cutting GM spend the money to put a screen in the MAFs if all it did was obstruct airflow?

I believe the engineers intent was to straighten the air flow across the metering sensor. And for that reason, personally, I'd leave it alone.
