I need to clean up my exhaust on my 02 ss. I will stay with the single pipe setup but I am a little confused as to the diff between a y pipe and the flowmaster merge collector.
Are they both for the single pipe setup and single muff out the back similar to the stock setup? I want to stay with the changes I've made there (single magnaflow muff) but am trying to decide which y pipe with the pacesetter LT's already on the car, or this flowmaster merge collecter? Which brand tucks up the best, makes the most power, fits the best? Thx!

I have had some really crappy Y-pipes as-delivered.
The original style TSP, and the Jet-Hot, both had one
pipe stuck into the other and it was heinous, how bad.
I had to hog back about 1/2" of stick-in. Even then,
if you have an eye for flow, you can see that the one
side that's the vertical of the "T" would tend to blow
back against the straight leg side, at least partially.
On one of the pipes it looked like the junction was a
dog-whistle setup against both streams, straight shot
down either pipe was bisected by a right angle tube
junction. But the money was sunk so I just hogged
off the sharps and hooked it up.
That's just dumb and not helping. The merge Y types
don't make one stream fight the other. But they are
less compact and somebody would have to make two
bends and do extra welding. So cheapskates get crappy
plumbing, way of the world. But there's no reason to
buy crappy if you can see better for the same price.
Eyeball the pics with a "be the ball" mindset, it'll jump
out at you.
Now "merge collector" means something different to
me, that's on the headers where primary meets collector.
Some fancy aerodynamical shabizzle, more about pulse
scavenging than not-head-butting.

Well it is a merge pipe, not exactly a collector. Most of the premade y-pipes have a crappy "merge" where the 2 pipes coming off the headers join into one. The flowmaster merge is a cleaner design, which will help exhaust flow.
Here is a pic to better illustrate what i am talking about.![](http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/norm/flo-y300400_m.jpg)
This will give you a better idea of what i mean. People use an item similar to this inplace of the crappy "y merge" that come with most premade y-pipes.

If you aren't running anything extreme (which would usually require true duals) then would there really be that much of a difference to run a merge as suggested in this thread? I just don't see where it would be that beneficial on a light-medium modified car. P&P your TB would offset anything lost from the typical y-pipe setup.

The flowmaster merges are supposed to help with rasp also. I have not done a back to back test with mine so I couldn't tell you. But I believe some others have.

I think I have seen a couple of projects with a LG merge in place of the Y but I have not been able to find one so maybe it was a custom piece, I have been looking for it for a while with no results it looked very nice I think it was 2x3" into 4"

My current hacked up setup are 3" coming off the headers, made into somewhat of a y and a merge into a straight 3". The muffler shop suggested making the y out of 2.5" stuff to get it up tighter and the merge a 3" piece going into a 3" piece straight pipe.
I'd certainly like to tuck it up tighter but wonder if I'll give up any power making a new y with 2.5" vs the existing 3" in a 550hp setup, even if it merges into 3" pipe afterwards?
