How much work are you doing yourself on this car? I hope a lot, it's a great way to learn AND you can proudly say "Yup! I built it!"

GOOD MAN! Get you hands dirty but don't get hurt. Learn how to do this stuff, it'll stay with you forever.

We are having a guy bring us a vortec engine out of an older suburban it's not here yet but that will give me something to do in the winter when I can't drive thanks to the snow. Then I can sell it, get my money back, and do it again. Hey maybe if I'm good I can start a business haha.

hope you have a LOT of tools.

I've spent probably $200 or so on tools since I got my engine and I'm not even taking the rotating assembly out.

I wouldn't trust a 10 bolt to launch hard on a stock car much less in the 11s. Mine grinds and whines when it gets warn even on my anemic slow stock Z.

also, myfirst, ALL automatic transmissions require a torque converter. A "stall" is just the point at which the transmission fully engages, before then it's slipping partially. The idea behind getting a stall (correct me if I'm wrong, this is how I understand it) is to get the rpms up pre-launch so that you get to your power center quicker.

They had a box of converters because when you replace an old self destructing transmission you NEED to get a new one as well. (well not "need" as in it won't work.. but need as in it's a very good idea.. metal shavings and whatnot, time.. all can play factors and while the tranny is out it's not hard to do..)

The only thing a higher stall converter is gonna do is allow you to hold revs higher before launch.. like when you're staging you can have your foot on the brake and on the gas to get the rpms up just below stall, then punch it when it hits green.. gives you a harder launch without straining your brakes.

'least that's how I understand it.

No your right. Like a 3600 stall let's you launch at 3600 rpms. That's why I'm getting an engine to practice on, so I can understand everything haha. But torque converters aren't the same as engines tho.

teardown is a lot of fun. I've had a blast with my LQ4 so far.. the part I'm at now though is the expensive one. so.. it's gonna be slow going from here out.

when I swap the ls1 out, I plan to tear it down all the way. It runs, it just doesn't run WELL.. I have a home planned for it anyway so.. it's a great learning experience that's for sure.

I find that in life you can study and read concepts and theories all you want.. but until you DO IT.. you don't understand fully.

Good on ya I say. I kinda wish I owned a customs/rod shop sometimes.. I spend all my spare time (and money..) working on cars it seems.

Yea that's what I want to do when I'm on my own. Work at a little hot rod shop and fix engines (or put them together) and make a living off of that. I'm not sure if you can make a steady income doing something like that though unless you work as a funny car mechanic or work at some famous car parts company.

We took my TA down the street to the trans shop yesterday and when we drove by today it was still sitting outside and their son who is supposed to do it isn't there yet. I start school tomorrow so I guess I can't do anything with my car which pisses me off.

Alright so I guess the plugs were stuck in the engine so they fixed that but they need to put on the headers, I had something wrong with the exhaust, and they need to put in the trans mount. Should be done in a few days.

that was an entertaining read.

Find a new trans shop.

your transmission will be fine with a bigger converter as long as an aftermarket cooler goes in with it. Has your tuner done anything with the transmission settings in the ecu? Honestly, with the way your trans guys are, i would doubt the tuner also.

also, speaking from first hand experience, aftermarket MAF's are a waste of money

ALRIGHT! SOME FORWARD PROGRESS!! The TA is back from the trans shop. had to put new plugs in, something else was wrong with it that I can't remember, and My headers are on. Now I have to meet the Justune guy at the track so he can tune the car. I still have to order my Z06 wheels, ram air hood, and MT radials. 12.8 here I come! (hopefully lol)

And no. My dad is being very very stupid and immature. I made the mistake of putting too much oil in my chevy and he flipped the **** out and won't even talk to me. I asked if we could go wednesday and he said "probably not because im going fishing thursday". He isn't even taking me with him...

your not gonna hit 12's!!! I got a 04 GTO with cam, heads, intake, throttle body, headers, slp exhaust, injectors, and mass- air flow and without a stall i hit low 13's!!!! Can't launch the car. since the car don't start biulding power till higher rpm's, the car is a dog at take-off.
Sounds like the guys at the trans shop don't want you to go fast!!!!

You're 16 but your dad is the one being stupid and immature? Anything is possible but I'm kinda doubting that

I was running in Illinois and western NY which are both around 900-1000 DA. I ran a best of 13.1 @ 106 with a lid, LT headers, ORY, ported TB, LT headers, 3.23 gears, tune and nitto drag radials. Don't expect 12's although anything is possible.

Then I added a TCI 3500 stall with tranny cooler and I ran 12.5 @ 108 all day long. The stall and stock 4l60e lasted over two years, 200+ passes and lots of street miles. Too bad the tranny shop people don't have experience like we do with these cars and aftermarket stalls. If they did then they would be suggesting you get one sooner rather then later

Well if your dad didn't want to talk to you because you accidentally put too much oil in your car, you wouldn't think he needs to grow up and talk to you because you made a mistake?

And I'm going to aim for 12.9. Gotta set goals and go from there right? And an experienced driver will be running it the first few times. Then me. And if I want to mod my car, then I'm gonna have to do it under the radar so my dad won't find out.

Get the mickey thompson street radials for the track. Drop the air to 20 psi. When you do a burnout make sure you see smoke first and then count out five seconds. Too much heat will hurt these tires traction and waste expensive rubber. Brake stall to about 2000 rpm's and nail the gas on the third yellow light (this allows for a near perfect R/T but has no effect on your ET).

With good fall air you definately got a shot at a 12.9. Good luck!
