Castrol has re-vamped their entire line of synthetic oils and everything is now called "Edge".

German Castrol has been re-packaged to reflect this but it is the same made in Germany oil as before.

 

By "same oil as before," do you mean the original green German Castrol or the then changed to the less effective (but still good) German Castrol yellow; each coming before this change to Edge.

 

It should be the same as recently packaged, the amber version. The green version hasn't been made for a few years now. The amber version was considered just as good as the green version on BITOG forum.

I'm gonna use it.

It's supposed to have some of the best wear protection of any oil and its very reasonably priced for synthetic. I have used it a couple times and its a little thin for the hot florida climate so I've been sticking to a top notch conventional 10w30 or good synthetic. Usually I go with 10w30 vr1 or penzzoil ultra oil.

 

It has the highest breakdown temperature of oils on the market.

It used to be only available at BMW and Porsche dealers.

It tests closer to a 10W-40, not a 0W-30.

There's other technical stuff I won't bore you guys with here.

Many people consider it the holy grail of engine oil-and maintain a healthy stock of it.

I've been using it for about three years now. I recently badly overheated my engine after blowing off the radiator hose then (unwillingly) having to drive two miles with no coolant with the temp gauge pinned high. My (+193,000 mile) engine and bearings have no damage and runs just great today with no noise or smoke in the exhaust whatsoever.

I firmly believe using German Castrol saved my engine from destruction.

 

If you're gonna start looking for this oil, it's Castrol Syntec 0W-30 and MUST say "MADE IN GERMANY" on the back panel.

OR the newly labeled bottle as shown above that also says "MADE IN GERMANY" on the back panel.

There was a run of this oil that was U.S. made. Do not buy or use it, it's not the stuff.

 

We've got 150,000 miles on my wife's LS1 (and 108,000 of those were put on my FHP before we took ownership) and have been running GC since the first oil change in our possession. Recently (out of pure curiousity) I cut open the (WIX) filter that was last on the car for nearly 10,000 miles and it was free of anything foreign. I am now using Amsoil's extended life filter to compliment what is a really good oil.

German Castrol is also our TBSS and my Turbo T.

 

I run it because it gets lumped into autozones $30 oil change specials on a regular basis and it makes my ls1 much much quieter.

If I can't get it when I need it, I will pick up Pennzoil Platinum and have good luck, just a little noisier.

After the last Mobile 1 I bought that looked like pouring water, I wouldn't use that **** in my lawn mower.

 

That reminds me... I have GC in my snowblower too!

 

My stash is down to a dozen quarts. Haven't bought it for approx. 4-5 years. Remember to store it @ inside temps, well above freezing.



Saw a few UOA's on Bobs' a couple of years ago. Felt, @ that time, that it wasn't quite as effective. Haven't checked UOA's on BITOG recently. Never got around to buying any, 'cuz haven't needed it. Will have to buy next year or year after.

Last time I looked into oil performance was when Patman had posted the UOA's from Pennzoil platinum, as an alternative to the green stuff. That's how long it has been.

It's generally a great car. Mine will be the only 460/5 speed ZF tranny Galaxie. Am building & restoring @ an aggressive pace. Biggest hold up has been paint prep, as the guy I bought it from was a complete newb & put literaly thousands of half moon swirls in the original paint & then primered over it. Am not blasting the body. So, getting them out has been a friggin' lot of work. Hope to have her primed in 2K MP182 this week & maybe into applying color coat. 460 & 5 speed installation work is done. It is also getting lowered & has a 9" rear end.

 

I live in the deep south, my garage has air conditioning, I kid you not I run mine with those now also discontinued a/c delco gold ultraguard oil filters, AC Delco UPF-44.

 

It's good stuff guys. We are in that group of people "in the know" who don't subscribe to internet myths, what manufacturers claim or go with the crowd. We are an educated bunch of motor heads.
