Default LS3/LS7 coil conversion to an LS1?

Alright, I have an F Body and currently run the stock coil packs on a tall billet valve cover I had made. With the Harrop these somewat get in the way of the pelnums. With the TEA heads I had it worked, but with the MAST eads they have a taller rim making the VC sit about 3/8" higher. I do not have that space. So the Holley VC look nice but are designed for the newer style coils.

Do the new coils have any benifit? Do you need a different wire harness? I use Big Stuff 3 so I need to consider this. There supposed to be some truck coils that have the same bolt pattern too.

Any input will be appreciated!

Yes new coils do have a benefit. Stronger and larger signal. I just bought the Holley valve covers and newer style coils, part # 12611424 flat style to go with.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...ls1-coils.html

Megasquirt actually tested the LS1, LS2, and LS2 Truck (D585 w/ heatsink) coils and its on their site I just couldn't find it, but the signals were much stronger than the LS1 and carried longer.

Can you use the same wiring harness or are the plugs different?

I believe the pinouts are the same yes so you can reuse your harness

Looks like Rockauto has the LS7 coils pretty cheap.

The Megasquirt pinouts are the same, but appear to show the plugs are different.

I am using BigStuff 3, so I do not have a ton of options.

this might help! Also you can just relocate any of the coil packs to the frame rails like the FI guys do.

Ok after doing some researching it appears that you will need the correct harness for whichever coil you are using. The terminals are flat in the LS1 coils and round in the other it appears. I am getting some just in case.

Let me know if those plug into the stock harness ok.

The coils are pretty cheap from Rockauto.

I will let you know in 3-4 months lol, I am deployed. I bought my coils part # 12611424, flat style, off Corvette Forum for $110 shipped. It appears the connector that plugs into the actual coil is just different, the connector that plugs in the main harness is the same across the board for LS coil harnesses.

The harness plug will be made different on the coil end but the engine harness end will be the same as LS1.

The LS2/3/7 coils are a bit more powerful than the original LS1/6 coils. The real jump in spark power is when you upgrade to the truck coils with heat sinks on them.

All the info and facts are here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/12985321-post1.html

Megasquirt actually tested the LS2 coils vs the Truck coils and there wasn't a huge difference in spark power. But they were both much more powerful than the stock LS1 coils.

From the megasquirt page ( http://www.megamanual.com/seq/coils.htm ):

"These LS2 coils are incredible. Even compared to the LS1 coil, these are just crushers! On the LS1 coil there is around 40 milliamps of peak secondary current with 5 milliseconds of dwell time. On the LS2/truck coil (AC Delco D585), there is 120 milliamps!"

Here's their video:

Hi
I'm Nev from Melbourne Australia ,
i have been reading through some great information you have shared regarding coil conversion from ls1 to ls3 and was hoping you coul assist me . I have been experiencing problems after my conversion from ls1 coils to ls3 on my 408 . Missfire at low rpm and hard cranking with pre- ignition when you need to start and engine is still close to operating temp. My tunner is telling me to go back to the ls1 coils . Would the table in the megasquirt manual be correct for my purpose
.To get 5.6 milliseconds of running dwell, the nominal dwell parameters should be set to:

Maximum Dwell 6.1 milliseconds
Maximum Spark Duration 2.0 milliseconds
Acceleration Compensation 0.6 milliseconds

Battery Voltage Compensation
Setting Net Voltage Dwell Compensation
-4.0 8.0 Volts 2.4 milliseconds
-2.0 10.0 Volts 0.9 milliseconds
0.0 12.0 Volts 0.0 milliseconds
2.0 14.0 Volts -0.5 milliseconds
4.0 16.0 Volts -0.9 milliseconds

thanks Nev

Hello and welcome to LS1tech!

I don't believe any of my posts discussed swapping to LS3 style coils. I did talk a lot about using the truck coils with heat sinks, which are not LS3 coils.

I would not know why swapping from LS1 to LS3 coils would cause a problem. Other then their plugs, they are very similar.

I have not done any of the PCM changes myself nor would I be able to. I have not had any of the issues you've described.

My posts pretty much outline how to do the swap to the truck coils with the heat sinks and any PCM changes were done by the mail order tune people I use.

I'm sorry I can't be of any more help.

If you are asking me, I don't have or know of the settings for any coils. I'm not a PCM tuner guy. I leave that to a tuning shop.
