Default Any differences between OEM and aftermarket SLP dual/dual cat-backs?

Are there any differences between the OEM and the aftermarket versions of the SLP dual/dual cat-back? Construction, sound, flow, etc? Thanks!

SLP's D/D is SLP's D/D. There is no OEM D/D as far as i know. It was an option on SS's and Hawks.

*edit* Yes, the SLP D/D is far superior to any OEM catback, in all areas you were questionig. Sorry i had a brain fart w/ the first part of the post.

OEM = the optional exhaust that was installed by GM.

Aftermarket = buying one from SLP for $600.

Okay you're talking about the optional exhaust from GM, right? Like for the Hawks and SS's? Then yes it's the same exhaust. SLP D/D is what was used. There's also the 2OTL, which i belive is the same muffler just a different setup (obvisouly). The cars were sent to SLP and fitted there. Did i get it this time?

I was under the impression that the SLP Performance Parts DD is louder then the OE SLP DD.

No because the cars were sent to SLP to be fitted. So it's gotta be the same. Why would they make 2 different versions?

I've heard/read this as well so it is possible.

I also believe the the 2OTL has a different muffler from either one...it's actually supposed to be one of the best flowing cat backs available (among cat backs with a muffler that is) for the LS1.

The factory SLP D/D and the aftermarket SLP D/D were not exactly the same. The aftermarket D/D is louder than the D/D that came on most Firehawks & SS's

On SLP's message board this quesiton came up. The factory SLP D/D got in trouble one year for noise and ended up with a ring of silence in the left side. Check out a OEM SLP D/D on a Firehawk, 99 percent of the time you'll find the left exhaust tip is much cleaner than the right one. This is due to the ring of silence.

Some of the earliest D/D's didn't have the ring of silence. I can't remeber what year the ring went in.

I put a aftermarket SLP D/D (direct from SLP) on my 99 T/A. It was louder than every D/D I encountered on a Firehawk or SS. Both of the tips on my D/D get dirty. I had a Firehawk owner ask why the D/D was louder on my car at the time I didn't know about the ring.

Friend of mine has a 00 Firehawk that had a factory D/D on it. My T/A with the aftermarket one was always louder. Neither car had LT's and both had cats at that time. Both of the T/A's tips get dirty the Firehawks left tip stayed clean.

BTW - the aftermaket D/D was still pretty quiet. I got mine in 1999. SLP may have changed the muffler a little to make the current D/D louder.

I thought the "cone of silence" was removed on all OE LS1 apts. Mainly the LT1's got the "cone". Anywho, yeah the aftermarket DD is supposed to be a little louder b/c of a different muffler.

Seems kinda pointless to make them different? Then again, its SLP, you never can tell what they're thinkin'.

The cone of silence was used on another SLP cat-back due to noise restrictions, mostly LT1 vintage applications. I think this mostly for factory 2OTL systems.

SLP didn't want to use the ring of silence but OEM/GM noise restrictions limits ended up requiring it. Wasn't by choice.

Excellent information! Just what I was looking for!

Has anyone tried removing this ring of silence? I'm guessing it would hurt airflow...

The tips on my 99 are equally dirty on the insides so I dont think there is a 'ring of silence' in there....is there any other way to tell? Where would it be located? My system is not the aftermarket DD...

I know that, but I dont believe mine has a ring of silence....so if mine is quieter, then it's a difference in the mufflers...

*I think, its been awhile* to check for the ring of silence run a coat hanger up the passenger side pipe; if you hit something before the muffler, that's the ring. If not then there isn't one.
