I thought it had something to do with not all the fuel being burnt as well?
Said something like that on Top Gear, a newer sports car had some sort of system that introduced a tiny amount of fuel into the exhaust so it did that on every gear change.
Pretty cool idea, anyone else remember that?

Popping is probably fuel dumped and burning in the pipe;
the PCM is always a little behind and abrupt airflow
changes are not well tracked. So it's shooting fuel
for 6000RPM when you've shifted down to 4500, for
a few spins.
Exhaust plumbing will affect the sound volume of this,
but I doubt it's responsible for the occurrence. Though
a somewhat bent tune resulting from plumbing changes
and no, or sloppy post-tuning, is not uncommon.

I get the popping sound when the car isn't warmed up yet. If I ride the gear up to around 2500-3000 before I shift and I'm under, give or take a bit, but 160* on the gauge I get a loud pop or two before I can get it into the next gear. Just pretty much stock ls1 motor with lm1. Have had headers sitting in the garage for 2 weeks now, just can't find the time to install them. I personally don't like the popping sound. Reminds me of my v6 with flowmasters, did that crap all the time. Guess I'll find out what the headers and ory do.

Are you talking about anti-lag for turbo cars?

The popping you usually hear is unburnt fuel being burned in the muffler or at the exhaust tip. Hence the 'pop' is because it usually echos in the muffler or as it hits oxygen.

Thats my buddy's vette, been telling him for years its the best sounding LS...other than an LS7 that is. Its definitely not caused by cats on his car lol, I will say that. It sounds much better in person too

Not really sure the reason but all of the Vette's make the popping noise and I freaking love it. With stock exhaust you can't hear it as much but add headers and its pure ear pleasure. Here is mine.

the popping noise is unburnt fuel hitting hot pipes.
my car pops like crazy and it's not because of a "low restriction" exhaust setup lol. i'm sure the 2.5" y pipe exit isn't helping matters. esp given that both the inlets are 3". thanks tsp haha they fail to mention that about their new ss y pipes.
