new intake on the block
you can also see the joints were the runners meet the bottom shell in the first two pictures.
i think it is a vibration welded 3-piece.
i'm not about to cut it open to be sure. hopefully someone else is braver than i am.

hopefully the dorman intake will respond to porting. i definately don't think this will be a buy-and-bolt-on upgrade the way it comes, though.
hopefully a shop will do a little dyno time with one to see what they're actually worth.
I might grab one of these to replace my LS1 intake on the 99 SS i just bought. The EGR plug is horrendous though, definetely needs a black coated freeze plug.

From looking at these pictures I'd say the Dorman intake really is just a cheap copy of a FAST 78 and probably within 5 hp of a real FAST 78. Yes it could benefit from some porting but no more so that a FAST. Now the only thing keeping me from buying it is being poor.
the "wedge" on the side of the port looks larger on the dorman part, and i'm not sure if that large hump on the top of the port is there on the FAST 78/90 like it is on the dorman. those are just judging from the pictures...

that hump on the top of the port that is on the dorman where the upper shell meets the middle and lower shells doesn't seem to be there on the fast. the fast seems pretty flush.
i hope someone can come up with a better picture to alleviate my concern here. it is a concern to me, as most of the runner airflow is supposedly at the larger radius of a runner. this is where runner shape should have the most impact on airflow
