Default High Amp Alternator Charge Wire?

Hey Guys, I'm installing a 220amp alternator and I'm looking to upgrade the charge cables. Anyone know of a kit for a 2001 Trans Am the output? Or maybe a DIY link I can reference? I'm thinking its 4AWG that will do the trick, but I'm finding some conflicting info.

Since it is such a short run of wire I think 4 gauge will do. Thats double what the factory wire is

4 awg will be fine. Be careful.... it starts off as just an "alt upgrade and big cable" but then quickly turns into something else. See here:

220a is kind of on the limit of what 4 ga is capable of carrying. If you haven't beefed up the grounds I would seriously consider upping that to 2 or 0 gauge. Even if you had upgraded the grounds I'd be a little leery.

I'm running a dual 450 in tank setup and a few fans for the procharger, but that alone isn't my real concern. I have 2 JL audio amps 600/1v2 and 400/4 v2 Those 2 alone have a fuse rating of 90amps plus the roughly 34amps combined from the 2 pumps is where I start to get a little worried about the stock setup.. Should I connect the alternator and fuse to their own ends and stack on the battery or connect like they do from the factory? I would think at 4 gauge stacking would be better on their own termination points..

Might as well throw in another battery for peace of mind.

I have one that I was going to mount in the back specifically for the amps. Thanks for the reminder.

This is what I have where my battery used to be. Battery is now in trunk using BMR relocation kit.

1/0 gauge from battery + to the junction post with ANL fuse right off the battery
1/0 gauge from battery - to chassis ground in trunk.
4 gauge to starter
4 gauge to alt
4 gauge to +post on fuse box

It's called techflex. It's stuff I use in my stereo installs. Its abrasion resistant, and visually blends into the factory harnesses better than just a bunch of different color jacketed wires.

All of my connections have hydraulic crimped copper lugs with adhesive lined heat shrink. Should be a permanent connection and never have any corrosion.

Make sure that you use the same gauge wire to ground the alternator to the chassis as the wire going to the battery.

Not only is that not necessary in a trunk mounted battery relocation like I have, you would actually want to run a different gauge wire if you are comparing a 20ft length of wire to a 3ft length of wire. So if I had a 20ft length of 2 gauge running from battery up to alternator then i would only use say a 4 gauge from alt to chassis ground or in my case as in every ls f body the alt grounds to the block and there is already a 4 gauge grounding the block to chassis
