I was stuck in brutal traffic on my way home yesterday, but since my fans run all the time at low speeds, my coolant temp never went above 194F. My oil temp never went above 201 and my trans temp never went above 180! So it's definitely beneficial.

My setup has low-speed fans on pretty much full
time and high speed on under any kind of hard
driving.
If you're trying to hold a 175F ECT you're probably
trying to make a 150F tank whilst sitting on 120F
asphalt. Need a lot of airflow to do that. Cooler air
helps. I could not hold 180F temps at 80MPH and
fans running, during my Georgia trip in July with
the A/C on. A/C dumps a lot of heat onto the rad.

The thermostat prevents overcooling. More airflow,
more radiator surface area, all just give it more room
to work. Thermostat sets the minimum coolant temp
