Question Whats the bad rep on the SLP headers

Several of the replies from my past thread said that they have heard bad things about SLP headers. What seems to be the problem with them? I've not heard anything. No one I know has put an headers on there car so I'm turning to the experts, that would be you guys. My car is the 35th LE SS, I don't use it for racing purposes, but I do like to play when I get it out. I just want the power.

You want power and clearance? get:
QTP/Kooks $$$
Pacesetter/Jet Hots $

SLP headers provide decent peak power, but do not offer the same low end tq characteristics that Grott designed based LS1 Long Tubes offer (along with even better top end over the SLP's to boot). I know this as I've had both SLP LT's and QTP HVM LT's on my car.
The SLP's perform. The others perform better.

Also, clearance wise, the SLP LT's hang pretty low at the collector, creating speedbump anxiety while daily driving.

I installed some Pacesetters on my car last summer and I love the way it runs. It sounds a lot louder and meaner on top of dropping close to .4 in the 1/4. But this was with a ORY-pipe. It adds the power for a cheaper price than most other LTs. If you just want to play, LTs will give you the power and the sound that you want. I also haven't had any clearance problems with the stock springs except for the ORY because it is not sandwiched on the driver side like the stock Y-pipe. IMO adding LTs was the best mod I have done yet.

If you want power get the QTP's or kooks the reason why the SLP headers suck is the hassle of getting them in the f!$%*&^ car they are a pain in the ***, also the price is high, if you want all out power get the QTP or kooks or if you want good headers get the hookers or pacesetters I don't see any mods in your sig so pacesetters should be a excellent choice for you. Goodluck hope I helped out

bad clearance is the reason. Plus the installation is a pain in the ***.... you have to pry the tranny to slip the headers in to either side plus you have to remove the steering linkeage, some solder in wire extensions. If you have $$$ get some quality stainless headers like the ones stated above. If not get some PaceSetters. I bought some PaceSetters last year and am really happy with them. The ORY that they sell sucks but it should slip into place after a few beers and plenty of swearing at the pipes.

Kooks headers are a lot, and I'm debating if I should get Kooks or Pacesetter into my Ranom Tech cat back.

I spent over $1,000 on slp LT's back in my pre-ls1tech days... I've been kicking myself ever since. (that grand would get me a really nice set of StainlessWorks or kooks/qtp) The SLPs were definitely a pain to install and they hang very low. Driveways, speedbumps, dips in the road, bumps in the road all things that ruin my day with SLP LT's. I'm going to have to do something else, soon.

I agree with all the above comments concerning the performance and PITA install...just to reiterate...they hang way low...mine scraped all the time...so much that it discouraged me from driving it around as much as I'd like (it's only a toy, not daily driver). Now I have Kooks and love them...when I did the swap, I was able to experience back-to-back the difference in ease of install of the Kooks vs. SLP...the Kooks tuck up in so nicely it's like having stock clearance...

They hang low and Kooks/ QTP's are better but the SLP's are stainless steel and coated as well. Pacesetters are not. They perform okay but the install isn't the easiest. I know you don't have to pry the tranny since I just did a pair 3 hours ago but they also cost quite a bit.

Unless a header is stainless steel you risk the chance of it rusting out.

Heres some cliffnotes:

1) Clearance is wretched. You will scrape on everything and its mom
2) Performance is wretched. Great peak numbers, no power under the curve
3) Install is wretched. A bottle of Jack Daniels and a mouth like a sailor are needed to get them installed
4) Price is wretched. For their price you could have a better header such as Kooks or QTP. One with real 304 stainless steel, not the 409 crap.

Go with a different header and never look back.

Pacesetters are a lot cheaper and may only be 5 HP short of Kooks or QTP. You can either spend under $400 on Pacesetter or spend an extra $200 to get 5 HP. Its you choice. Seems like a waste of $$$ for 5 HP to me. Pacesetter is better quality than others may make it seem like.

i see how you get frustrated sometimes with the questions here. I remember responding to a thread earlier by this same person with the same topic and I know this question has been asked many times and can be answered by search...
