Default track-tested FRA mod

I went out to the Texas Motorplex today to do some Independence Day racing with Coach, and I decided to block off my free ram air. I've heard it mentioned more than once that you will reduce your ET if you block off the FRA in the summer due to the extreme track temperatures. Well, that sounds great in theory. I put it to the test today, and I got very different results.

Keep in mind that this was only one pass w/ the FRA blocked. We only had two time trials, so I couldn't play with it during the day. My first pass was with the FRA blocked, and I ran an 11.96 @ 111 MPH with a 1.63 60'. My electronic weather station was reporting temps in the low-to-mid 90's all day and a humidity of 41-45% throughout the day. I was running race gas to alleviate any chance of detonation. After looking at the timeslip, I knew something wasn't right. I ran two weeks ago in the 1/8th-mile with a D.A. of 2,800', and I ran a best of 7.41 @ 91 MPH. With a D.A. hovering around 3,100' today, I ran a 7.56 @ 89.xx MPH on the 11.96 run. That's .15 just in the 1/8th! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

I immediately took the block-off plate out after I returned to the pits. On my last time trial, the air and track temp was a few degrees hotter. Everyone seemed to fall off another .02-.03 from the first pass. I ran an 11.85 @ 112 MPH with a 1.62 60'. That's a FULL tenth and MPH in the 1/4! I was shocked to see this much of a difference with just the FRA mod. I had never track-tested it in the same day, much less in this heat. I ended up losing first round after breaking out with an 11.80 on my 82 dial-in. Oh well, that's bracket racing.

Yes, I agree that I needed to get a few more passes in w/ the FRA blocked off, but I have no doubt that the ET reduction was due to having the working FRA. I'll track-test it again w/ multiple passes when I get to run again just to get some conclusive results, but the FRA seems to be just as good in the hot summer temps as it is in the cool fall and winter temps!

not wanting to steal any thunder here...but since im online....he runs 26x9" Hoosier slicks (non-DOT) on 15x7.5" Centerline's. its all on his website. yeah, id say they are some of the lightest. they have to be lighter than a 26x10 or 11" tire, right?

1. Go with your gut instinct if you're having second thoughts on your dial-in while sitting in the staging lanes.

2. Watch the cloud cover more often when you don't have clear skies!

The FRA mod (with stock filter) gave much improved 60-90 MPH performance in my '99 SS and only marginally less enhancement vs. the K&N FIPK---but Gawd I like the way the FIPK looks!

FRA, port and polish the stock MAF, and cut the EGR pipe are must do mods for the hardware challenged. A dremel and a hacksaw reduced my 60-90 times by .4 (+/-.03) secs. over a pure stock setup. My gas mileage also showed significant improvment.

Add about $50 to the FRA mod for the K&N filter and I think you'll really have a bang for your buck.
