Default Shaner throttle body overrated

I dynoed with my stock TB, then with the Shaner Stage II TB I received last Thursday, and gained a whopping 3RWHP only above ~5500RPM. Now, that's within standard deviation from one pull to another without changing any parts.

Needless to say, I'm gonna gripe to him about the performance he advertised to me on the phone, and am disgruntled enough with it to request to ship it back for a full refund.

Did you run it a while or just bolt it up...I think it will improve if you drive around for a while then dyno it...

I just bolted it up. Driving it for awhile? Why would the PCM need to relearn anything? I've seen others post 6-10RWHP on theirs, and it was implied those were without learning mileage.

well shaner told me the best way, and I do believe it, is to cruise around for a couple of hours slowly laying into the throttle. That should help out, it is a NEW piece to your fuel & air system which should need some learning.

well unfortunately every car reacts differently to mods. what works for some doesn't for others. look at MAF ends. same problems. atleast you didnt lose hp how much you pay for it? 3hp is 3hp, and for a bolt on car, i still say it's worth it. when you do head/cam it'll be worth more. hope you get what you want though!

z28kid98: Did you miss my signature? I've already got heads/cam/intake/headers/etc.

I paid $195 for a stage II truck version, so that I could keep my stock unit.

Well, your cost per HP is definitely not good....$65. Seems a typical price for big ticket items runs around $25-35 per HP.

Something like the FTRA is probably in the $17-22 range.

I home ported mine and could feel a noticeable difference in throttle response. I'd guesstimate 5-8hp worth. Costs me about $3 for sandpaper rolls for the drillpress.

The computer learning thing ONLY applies if your fuel trims go out of whack on the throttle body swap. IMHO Shaner's is no different from any other ported TB... it's good for a few rwhp... but it ain't gonna transform your car. I hear guys saying **** like "the car pulls 6th gear now!" and "it hits like nitrous in 3rd!" Damn that is some SERIOUS BS!!

Humm, don`t know about my dyno #s,but I gained a tenth and a half on a 1/8 mile track after I got a Shaner S2 TB. Drive it around and then take it to the track and see if it helped. If not, then I bet Mark will gladly take care of you!

It does seem to reduce the surging. Hell, I was cruising at 1100RPM through a parking lot at idle and it wasn't bucking. But that improvement isn't worth what I paid for it.

I sent him e-mail late Sunday, but no further followup yet. I don't follow why the TB would act any different at the track than the dyno...it's not like a Supersucker or the FTRA.

It's the last restriction in the intake system, so after you take care of it your getting the most out of your system. A ported TB helps, but even I'll say it's not the be all end all of mods. It's just one of the many things you need to make the car reach it's max.

At least you didnt lose power But seriously, there are no guarantees in this business especially concerning power gains. You can't exactly gripe at GM when your car doesnt dyno as strongly as another LS1 from the factory...
