Make sure the cooling system liquid level is full.
Make sure the cooling system has NO leaks.
Make sure your cooling fans work at the proper temps.
Its the simple things that can cause big headaches.

Re: Car is running really hot what to check first I'm with you man, mine has been hitting the red, actually jumps up and down, gets warmer if it's driven, when you would expect the airflow to cool it. No obsructions, car has full power, and the fans are coming on highand low. I'm just replacing the T-Stat, water pump, the tensioner, belt, and flush the system. Good luck to you, I just don't feel like trouble shooting it to death.
Re: Car is running really hot what to check first If everything checks out ok , Make sure condenser & radiator are clean from debris that cause airflow to be choked leafs, mud cottonwood anything that can restrict airflow.

Re: Car is running really hot what to check first Well I replaced the T-stat over the weekend with a hypertech 160. The car runs great now stays at 180 or below. I also talked with the service people at the chevy house and they told me that DEXCOL will oxidize and it will eventually turn to sludge. Mine had a lot of sediment flowing through it. Just for your info.

I had my car on a rack for an oil change one time and noticed a whole page of a newspaper was stuck to the front of the condensor. Once that stuff gets up there, there's no way for it to come back out.

computer-controlled indicator, it
could be getting fooled by electrical
intermittents, etc. A real fluid
reading would not jump abruptly as
there is thermal mass. Getting a
true temp reading (thermometer or
thermocouple) will let you know
whether it's real or not. Of course,
so will lots of steam and engine knock.
At 250F you should be seeing a lot of
coolant recovery blowoff activity.
