Do you think this will help me pass emissions?
I am not at all worried about flow as I am going to be running an ORY after my test. I have MAC headers and have the 3 inch cats tucked up very close to the collectors on the headers.
Your thoughts are appreciated. I have a XER 230/230 cam and 360ci motor. I need to pass emissions or I am going to be forced to swap cams.
Thanks,
Chris
adequate for emissions (duh), but they
need heat to work well. The headers put
them further away, allow more exhaust
cooling. So they will be less effective.
But maybe good enough.
I think the issues more revolve around
what this cam is going to do to your low
RPM emissions. My guess is, the high overlap
will let unburnt fuel/air through to a
higher extent, the cats have to burn this
or you'll fail HC and/or CO. One thing you
probably want is to be sure you're leaner
than normal (somewhat) for the test. You
need to have some excess O2 for the cats
to use in converting the unburnts. Full time
AIR used to do this but these cars only
run it during warmup. So whatever you get
has to come through the engine.
Go in with a brand new oil change (no extra
fuel / fumes from the oil via PCV) and fully
warmed up (cats lit up and ready, engine
at max temp). Maybe get some of that crappy
oxygenated fuel, if it's an option and not
already forced on you.

Or if this is not the case in Canada, don't you have a race car exemption option?

As long as you have no MILs (SES light) set and all your emission tests are in a ready (complete) state, you will pass. Different facilities have different policies about visiual inspections, not sure how strict the one by you is, but if you can get past the visiual, then proper tuning can take care of all the other emission issues related to no cats and/or a big cam. I could reinstall it but it would be a pain. I was thinking with a stock stat and the car really really warmed up. (Say a 2 hour drive beforehand and drive it right on the rollers I would have a good chance at passing.
I passed with ease with the 221/221 114LSA cam in the car and the AIR pump disconnected.
I am hoping with the stock stat, oil change right before, good warmup drive and idle at 975rpm I'd have a chance. We will see what happens in about a week when I go for the test <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
