Puzzling problem - please read!
Set up the timing w/ the cam gear dot at 6 o'clock, crank gear dot at 12 o'clock, lined up perfectly.
Then rotate the crank exactly one revolution, until the crank gear dot is back to 12 o'clock.
Viola...you're now "180 deg out" as you described.
I fucked up, and I learned from it, so heres my chance to learn what I fucked up on and make it right.

You didn't line the right marks up.
Why did it turn over by hand? Because the lifters were not pumped up.
Why did it try to start at first? Because timing was close enough, after turning it over the lifters got enough oil to pump up and increase lift, Valves hit pistons, lost compression.
I had an arguement in a forum with a guy that had a multi keyway timing set that he swore was on right. He had a picture of it installed. It was installed on the 2* retarded key slot and the cam dot was lined up with the 6* mark. It ran but not that great, it was 8* retarded.
The guy would not listen to me at all. It wasn't until a buddy of his got on there and told him it was on the wrong marks that he changed it.
And heres the bad part that no ones going to like.
I've been on this thread about an hour and a half, lots of BSing among friends and not much listening to people trying to help. Thats what I see.
What else I think about is whats going to happen next, so far it's a mystery why it went wrong, I wonder if it's going to be taken apart, figured out, fixed and put back together.
Well thats not the order of things, someone needs to figure out what went wrong before ANYTHING is removed from this engine.

would that be?!
I'll buy you some drinks!!!!
