Will a TR230 Run and Idle w/o a Tune?
I'm torn between the TR224/112 and TR230. I want to be as close to 400 RWHP as possible once I finish the bolt-ons, but I may not be able to get a tune for several months following the install.
Is there any chance of the TR230 running/idling on the stock tune in an M6? My mods are listed below.
Is the TR230 really worth it over the 224?
Thanks,
Josh

yes it will, i did it in an a4 for quite some time, drill out thr TB hole slightly and it worked fine..... but it needs a tune to get the most out of it..

I just went through your same decision TR230 vs 224. The 230 will be somewhat driveable on a stock tune but it will be a helluva lot better with a LS1 Edit tune. I just finished up my TR224 install and she runs pretty good on my LS6 cam tune, still heat cycling my springs so I didn't rev over 3K. The 230 and 224 cams make about the same power to 5200 rpms where the 230 starts to pull away. Using Jason's graph from his car showed the 230 was good for 11rwhp and 1 rwtq over the TR224. I would recommend alot of gear for the 230 as it will be very doggish off the line with stock 3.42's. I went with the TR224 alone for that reason. My car feels great with the stock 3.42's as the LS6 cam hardly had any more lowend torque than my stock cam. HTH

Yes...I've been driving around w/ the 230 cam untuned for the past 3 months (until today that is!). With stock tuning It idles just fine (somewhat rough initially..but after warmed up, it idles great).
Fortunately today I was able to get some LS1 Editing done at our local Fbody Dyno day. Overall I'm pretty pleased w/ the #'s. I made 392 hp/377 tq with stock heads. To give you a comparison, there was an 01 Z28 with GTP Stg II heads, Comp 231/237 cam (and full bolt ons) making 406 rwhp, a 99 C5 w/ GTP heads and TR224/224 cam making 396 rwhp (both cars were 6 speeds). I think the 230 cam handled itself pretty when compared to those 2 GTP headed cars.

Re: Will a TR230 Run and Idle w/o a Tune?
I just finished installing mine last night ...and the car started right up on the first shot, searched for an idle for about 10 seconds and was fine after that. I was actaully very suprised how driveable the car was on the ride home from my shop. Never stalled once and really didn't have much of any low rpm bucking. I do have a ported throttle body so I'm sure that helped with the idle.

i ran my car on the stock tune for about a month. it would run, but it wasn't exactly good. it surged some coming to stops but it usually wouldn't die. so, yes it will run, but you will really want to get a tune done on it. since the tune my car starts and drives great. just thumps really, really hard. i love the tr230, look at the numbers i made through a 12-bolt.

I drove for a year without a tune. Sometimes it would struggle at idle, but it wasn't bad. With tuning to help the idle it's way better.
