I think they started in 2004, but not positive. The Trailblazers and Envoys with the optional V8 all had aluminum blocks, but the aluminum motor was optional in the silveradoes and sierras(dubbed 5.3HO). I don't think any full size SUV's ever got the aluminum 5.3.

05 and 06 Chevys and GMCs with the Z71 package, this was the L33 motor, it came with the good 243/799 casting heads and 10:1 compression... Putting a stroker crank one would be nice!!!

If you can afford it, you should go for the 6.2. Look at it this way: If you got a 5.3, bored it to it's max(3.905) and installed a 4" crank, you would have a 6.28 liter. That is not much more than the starting point of the 6.2, will cost quite a bit to achieve, and will be maxed out. You can install the 6.2 as is and have room for growth in the future. As an added bonus you also get some of the best production heads GM has ever made.

I've got an aluminum 5.3 that is supposedly out of an '02 avalanche 4x4. I was under the impression that it was an option, and it just has the standard 5.3l heads. Nothing fancy.

if you intend to stroke, upgrade or otherwise go fast.. i would start with a 4 inch bore engine... before you but the aluminum 5.3, mashine it and add stroker crank etc you are out as much money as a new or slightly used ls3 shortblock...

i mean a brand new ls2 6.0 aluminum block is 1100 bucks... and it will take l92 heads... you are throwing away horsepower starting with a 5.3

you can get those engines complete for 600-1000. accessories and everything else adds up so its much cheaper to get one of these compared to an ls1.

thats true... but the second you start talking, boring, stroking etc.... its the wrong engine to start out with, if you are going to run it as is.. its a great deal... if you want to make the most power for your money you should do a 4 inch bore engine with l92 heads as a minimum
