Valve spring install tools?
Valve spring install tools? I'm getting ready to install a set of 918's and want to see what tool you guys are using for the install. The homemade tool or the Napa tool was very popular until the recent rash of broken rocker bolts and waterpump bolts. A member of the board is selling a setup with a hardened stud that seems to have solved that problem though. What are your thoughts on this and the other tools on the market. Thanks in advance.

Re: Valve spring install tools? I used the home made tool, but kinda modified it a little. I just basically drilled the hole through the tool for the bolt to go through and also drilled at an angle (same angle as when the tool is compressing the spring) so it won't bend the bolt/stud while compressing the spring. This tool worked great. I finished the spring swap in 5 hours with a dinner break in between.
Re: Valve spring install tools? So you just opened the bottom of the hole up some so not to come into contact with the bolt? Where did you find a bolt/stud to use or did you use a rocker/waterpump bolt? Thanks bud!

Re: Valve spring install tools? If you have a big budget, the SDPC valve spring tool + the MORE tool for the back 2 passenger side springs are IMO the *perfect* setup.
I wouldnt use the cheap tool anymore, after breaking a bolt myself. Somebody has broke a hardened bolt as well, and when it breaks, its even more of a bitch to get out than a "softer" bolt.

Re: Valve spring install tools? I think the "homemade"tool is the best I ever used.So far I've done 6 cars from 918's,Cranes to Revs with absolutely no problems or broken bolts.I use compressed air for the cylinders and make sure the bolt doesn't bottom out in the Head.
Now I can change springs in an hour.

Re: Valve spring install tools? I just got completed with the homemade tool larry was selling and didn't have a problem at all. They were dual springs too and it took me 3 hours straight no breaks....

Re: Valve spring install tools? love the homemade one. i actually cut down one from napa, but it's the same thing. i've changed springs twice without a problem. just didn't let it get bottomed out. i also used a longer hardened bolt and washers as needed.

Great tool. No bolts to break off in the head. Driver side was done in under and hour. Passenger side took a little longer prolly because I was tired. And 7 and 8 came off like a charm but you have to leave RR #6 off to get to 7, leave and number RR #7 off to get to #8. #8 will (if the keepers arent lose) a tap with a long screwdriver. I highly recommend this tool and the handle comes off so you can use a 5/8 racheting box wrench to get into the tight areas.
