Default head dilemma..port 853's or buy 243's

so i have some serious lifter tick and am thinking about pulling the heads soon...but my question is, once i have the heads off, would i be better off buying a set of stock 243's and having them milled, or sending out my 853's to TSP and having them milled, cleaned, ported, etc? im only looking to spend around $500 on the heads and i was wondering what would net me the best gains? im looking to mill them to around 62cc's also and running a stock size headgasket (keep it cheap)...thanks!

IMO the best thing to do would be to grab some 243's and either have them ported or port them later on down the road. They have more potential and will flow better in the long run.

well im only looking to build a high 10's car after a 150 shot and im really trying to keep cost down, so spending 1k on a set of heads is out of the question for me right now...just looking to see which setup would outperform the other ported 853 vs. stock 243

Buy 243's.... with very little work I've seen them pick up 35rwhp over LS1 castings. In fact I have seen them in stock form move more wind on a flow bench and make more power than I have seen some ported versions do. Stock 243's ARE THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK OUT THERE!

I was in the same boat and I did the research. Buy some 243's. You can take them off later and have them ported if you want. I saw some assembled 243's w/Patroit springs in the for sale section for $575 shipped, I think.

We're running a small run of cnc ported 241s in the stage 1.5 flavor for $800 without springs. This combo is a little over your budget, but you could also sell your stock heads to get back some cash.. I'd definately prefer the cnc ported LS6, but for $800 it's pretty hard to beat...

You know there's more companies out there than just TSP.

Stock unmodified 243s really are a tremendous value. I've seen virgin untouched 243 heads make an easy 25rwhp over stock 853s and 241s day in and day out. Add a good valve job and some milling and you're looking at close to a 40rwhp gain. Something to consider when on a budget.

I see it this way.. you can have your existing heads checked, milled, re-built, new seals, etc... and then P&P, (I can't see all this happening for less than 500, but that's another story), and you've spent your money, and will be maxed out on what they can do.

Or, Spend a little more and get some brand-new 243's for just under 600 shipped.. You'll still pick up some power but have the potential for more down the road...

Keep in mind the PRC LS6 heads are on special for $1000 a set. It's hard to buy a set of LS6 heads, have them broken down, valve job, milling all done for $1000.

The PRC cylinder heads ship fully cnc ported, valve job, milling & assembled using brand new cores to your specs!!

But at what real world gain over the stock 243's that will pick him up 30+rwhp?

ok so now im definitely looking at just picking up a set of stock 243's and milling them to around 62cc's...any machine shop should be able to mill them right? and how far do they need to be milled from stock to reach that cc level? thanks for the help guys!

tyler. Any machine shop can mill the heads for you. Also you shouldbe fine with your cam and 62cc on a stock gasket. Only way to know forsure though is to check.

I've got a set of 243s I'll let go pretty cheap. Or we could do them up for you. PM me or Shawn (Shawn @ Va Speed) for pricing.
