Default GTO CAM....yes I search a lot

I know the GTO is a piggy so my original setup (243 heads that have some port work and stainless valves with PRC dual springs and a streetsweeper HT cam) was designed for street driving and weekend fun in mind.

Having said this. I am not too happy with it. It makes power (420 HP, 390 Ft lbs) but it isn't enough honestly. Whats a cam that is a step up but not in the realm of donkey dick cams. I still want some street manners but want more power. When I do the new cam I'll add in a FAST 92/92 setup.

As for the rest of the car it is a 6spd vehicle, has all the bolt ons (except the FAST) and it has 3.73 rear end gears. I've been looking around at lots of different profiles but haven't seen anything that really jumps out as being able to make more power all around or at peak and isn't a super huge cam. Just seeing what everyone elses' experiences are.

Who did the heads, a head swap may be in order instead of a cam swap. A new cam may not help you much if the heads don't work.

A reputable shop in Las Vegas and then installed by an LSX specific shop in Phoenix. Heads are not the issue. Its a boring cam.

Bro your car isn't going to "WOW" you all of the sudden just because you swap cams and make 10 more HP.

GTO's are fat pigs, and need a lot of power to be "fast". I've built/driven/tuned 450-500rwhp GTO's that made me yawn. I don't see a cam swap being a cure to all your ills. Look into head work or a small shot of nitrous.

Like I said, heads are ported with a good valve job and nice valves...they're 243 castings. The car has 3.73's and 420 HP....its fun...but its not enough.

Seriously you only think I'd gain 10 PEAK HP through a bigger cam? I think with a bigger cam I could get more HP then that....especially when I'm ALSO going to swap on a fast 92/92 setup. The car has been significantly lightened up, its not as much of a pig as many. It weighed 3800 with me in it last time I weighed it at the track scales.

You might be able to pick up a Pat G grind or something similar that'll pick you up 10 across the board, but is that really going to be enough to warrant the labor/time in a 3800lb car?

Throw a set of SVO 36 lb'ers on it and a 100 dry shot. Simple cheap setup that'll make 520/500+ all day long and be completely safe.

I seriously think there is more to gain from a cam swap then "10 across the board"

I will be putting in injectors with the FAST setup....nitrous isn't an option here.

While I am a big supporter of nitrous and have had it in a couple previous cars without issue, this car won't see it.

you can have a great cam with decent heads and only make decent power, but you can have a **** cam and great heads and make serious power. open the FAST up with some porting & ger some aftermarket casting heads. a custom cam (frmo pat g or pred z) and you can make some real nice power. i cam swap isnt going to gain you so much power that you notice a big difference (say 30-40 hp). your heads are nice, but if you want that 30 to 40 hp gain, get a new set of heads. you might even see 50 with a bigger cam than you might like, b/c those 2 can spec out a cam with some manners. check the dyno results section and see all the people happy with their cams they got from these 2.

Thats a good cam. I don't see much to be gained from it except 10-12 across the board from a more aggressive lobe. The intake is going to give you more power than another cam swap would.

Still think so? Then do it, spend your money, and prove me wrong

Just put the fast on and see how you like it then. I just installed mine and was shocked at the difference (just sop right now, dyno coming soon). I have a cam with similar specs in a 383 with patriot ls6 heads.

You know....one of my pet peeves is when people post up pet names of cams and not specs and then I effing do it too....sorry.

I didn't think there'd be "only" 10 hp difference....I mean looking at the dyno section there are cam profiles making more power than I am by a lot with bigger cams....hell street sweeper cams with a similiar head set up are making 460 or so with 25 ft lbs more torque than I have. Specs: 236*-240*-111*-.630"-.610

And those guys have "upgraded" to the LS6 manifold which I already have. I mean I like the cam, but I think there might be something better out there......

I'm going to switch to the FAST 92/92 setup anyways so maybe I ought to just do that now and see what happens....I just don't want to be disappointed when I do, lol.

The cam you got in there might be a tad on the small size. Step it up to a mid 230's cam and toss a 100 shot on there... will make ya smile for sure

You should listen to damian summerwolf; i think too that it wont make a huge difference;15rwhp/10rwtq max! You wont feel 15hp in your car. I gained 17rwhp/10rwtq up top with my ported FAST and I dont really feel it.

I'll change my cam next year because I want to put a really bigger cam and I'm going from a low 22x cam to a high 234-238 one, so yeah it will make a difference with the FAST on board since the power is better only from 4500rpm but my cutoff is at 6400. the new cam powerband will be 3500-7000 instead of a 3000-6400...But I'm still afraid that it wont be that faster if I dont go with the Trex sized style cam but the only thing that keeps me to go there is that I dont wanna put bigger gear than 3:42/3:73 because its a street car.

As for you, youre already at 228-232 and you dont wanna go with the biggest cam outhere, so it leaves you to stay around mid 23x and under 240, which wont make a big difference. BUT it might get some good gain to go bigger and add the FAST too..but its gonna cost you $$$ Also remember that you might loose tq and its even more important in a heavier car..

You might just change for a FAST first and pray that its going to give you 20-35rwhp/10-20rwtq all the way from 1000rpm-7000 like others on this site, but you better be lucky...

I f I had to make the choice again, I would change the cam first instead of the FAST, but I'm glad its done.

Nitrous is your best option IMO.

It all depends who you get your ported FAST from. Hp cost $$. Good work cost $$. IMO one of the best out there and he deserves the $$ is Tony Mamo with his port work on the FAST.
Also you mention your heads and "some port work", how much is involved in that? that is 1 area I would look at with full port work/VJ etc, optimum quench, SCR/DCR it all adds up.
That little cam has the potential but you just have to tailor your combo to optimise it.
I wouldn't be surprised if you could get in the 460+ rwhp if you work your combo right.

main issue are you ready to dish out the $$. Why not call Ed Curtis and get his opinion on what head work is needed to maximise this cam. He designed it and fully knows his stuff on areas of head to be worked. If anyone can advise you on that it is him.
