Question Poor man's LS2... What do you guys think?

Hey guys, I have had my 6.0 LQ4 powered Datsun Z going for almost a year. Now that I am used to the power, I find myself wanting alittle more...

Right now my LQ4 is stock minus a Lunati Voodoo 60511 cam. My compression is only 9.4:1 with the stock 317 heads (w/yellow LS6 springs) or I would of gone with a little bigger grind.

I can nail a set of extremely low mileage 2005 5.3 heads (61 cc chambers) for $50 complete for the pair. My thought was to have my local performance machine shop cut the 5.3 heads for 2.02/1.57 intake/exhaust stainless steel valves, do a nice 5 angle valve job, some minor short side radias port work, and slap them back together with my LS6 yellow springs and using those on my LQ4 short block along with the same Voodoo 60511 cam (for the time being). If my math says that should put me at least in the 10.5:1 (if not 10.9:1), correct?

So what do you guys think? Decent, low buck, upgrade for my 6.0 LQ4?

Thanks.

i know if it were me and i had the engine apart id just go ahead and toss a custom cam in that to make it worthwhile. But if you dont have the cash for another cam i dont see a reason you wont hit your 400 hp goal at the crank... Just remember if you go milling the heads you will need the check for correct pushrod height.

I'll prob swap to a Lunati Voodoo 60512 or larger down the road, but I don't have the extra cash to make that happen too.

I wasn't planning milling the 706's or the 317's. I thought about it though, but I don't wanna mess with custom pushrods, etc. Plus I might want to be able to use a 125-150 shot of nitrous down the road without worrying about the head deck being thick enough to withstand it.

You can go ahead and run a 2.02 intake on the set of heads you have off of the 5.3. That is what I am running on my 6.0 with a good decking and the new valves I ended up with a 57-58 cc chamber. They bump the compression up a good bit

If you go the 6L block you can even bump the valves to 2.055 go with the Ferrea about 15% more flow in the back so but wiht time

an lq9 or an ls2 would be better but what you have the is not too bad, just make sure the valves do not hit the piston.

Here is a better Idea just buy some low milage LS2/LQ9 pistons. The 317 heads flow better in stock forum any way then the 4.8/5.3L heads

Used pistons = around$75 for just the pistons around $150-$200 with the matching floating rods.
Used heads = around $100 PLUS you will have to referbush them and add the larger valves and so on another $200-$500 depending on what you put on them.

Don't you forget you will also need to factor the hardware too

In the end won't they both cost the same?

All the mod additions to the LQ4 vs. a used LS2 and the yards? What are your total projected costs on the motor alone in the end if you don't mind me asking?

The parts and labor will be less than $300 for the 5.3 heads. I am already running ARP cylinder head fasteners and GM MLS gaskets are cheap enough.

I would just mill the 317 and get a better cam and springs, and push rods.

I already covered this, I might spray and want the head deck as thick as possible, plus I don't want to buy another cam, springs, and/or pushrods when what I have works.

Thanks anyway.

i would get the l92 heads and l76 intake, do some research on them, those things flow like crazy for a budget factory head.

yea, you are gettin close to L92 head prices when you talk about any port work. either way, i dont see an issue with spraying a 150 shot.

I like the L92's, just not all the extra stuff needed to make it all work. Plus, from what I've read, L92's like a lot more exhaust duration compared to the intake to really come alive.
