Default is it possible to put lifter back in without taking off heads?

So I dropped a lifter during cam swap... is it possible to fish it out and put it back without taking off the heads? I have read threads where its mentioned but never said how to do it.

Are you working on an LT1 or an LS1?

a very good magnet extension tool

craftsman makes one with a light at the end of it....

then you would have to get it in the hole from far away with no control as to its angle or position of the lifter.....very unlikely

heads are coming off

it's not too bad, just more expensive. On the upside, while they're off, you can send them to Total Engine Airflow and get them ported-

that would net you a huge amount of gain at once.

Your user name threw me off a bit. Yeah you will need to take the head off!

which lifter is it? I think you might be able to get at a couple of them if you take the intake and valley cover off. I think there are a couple holes under the valley pan that might help you get a lifter back into the tray threw.

where did the lifter fall to?? I mean can you get it out some how?

I just did a preliminary swipe with the magnet w/o dropping the pan and havent found it yet. I broke off one of the small oil pan bolt head towards the front of the pan when reinstalling the bolts so Im not even sure how to drop this thing. FML

ok heres some pics i took just a min ago for ya.
my motors torn down to the short block so look at these.

heres a pic of the rear hole under the valley cover

and heres a pic with the head off showing that you could maybe get a lifter started back up into #8, threw the hole under the valley cover.

Now i know its a long shot but u gotta take the intake off anyway if ur going to have to pull the heads, right??? So id pull the valley cover off quick and then make ur own decision. Good luck getting that pan off and finding that lifter. Hope this helps.....

When I took my heads off I noticed that you can't really access the cam....you just have holes.

So how do you get inside the engine to change cam bearings or pull lifters out?

It almost seems like you have to turn it on it's side and shake it.

Im not sure what ur asking?
To change the cam bearings im pretty sure ud have to tear the whole motor apart ''bottom end''

To pull the lifters out u have to pull the heads and then the lifter trays.

Luckly when i did mine i left the cam in when i pulled the lifter trays and lifters. If not a couple of mine would have fell into the oil pan as well.
