Well its like the title says.. How do i go about cleaning my pistons while they are still in cylinders? is there a certain scuff pad i can use? or type of chemical? Everyone tells me its a waste of time but i have nothing else better to do til i recive all my parts to put the engine back together.

any help is appreciated

This is a piece of cake. Bring a couple pistons pretty close to the top, and spray some brake parts cleaner on top of them. Enough to puddle on top of the piston and cover the carbon. Let it soak 5 minutes, then roll the crank till the piston is at the top and literally they will wipe clean with one wipe. Make sure to oil the cylinder walls down good after you are through, as the BPC will strip the oil coating off.

I took the time-consuming approach and scraped it off with a razor blade. Of course I went extremely slow and at a very narrow angle to avoid gouging the metal. Of course this worked well to get all the old headgasket material off of the block too - followed it up with some 1500 grit sandpaper for some areas that wouldn't seem to come clean.

If you let BPC soak for about 5 minutes, the carbon literally falls off. I dont understand why anyone would scrape anything.

OP, you wont even use 1 can for this....Go easy on the trigger and just let it fill the cylinder up just above the piston head (wont take much)

Both methods work apparently - I tried chipping it off with my fingernail initially and when I realized it wasn't going to be easy I just didn't think BPC would work. In hindsight I would've tried a rag sprayed with BPC - just not crazy about letting it drip down the walls and into the pan.

I use WD40 and a PLASTIC putty knife. Then wipe it off with a rag, vacuum out the ringland area. done.

Here's mine, but the trick is to let it soak for about 5 minutes, gives it time to work.

Get one in a very "fine" bristle and put it on a low speed battery drill. Takes about 30 seconds per cylinder. For extra sticky deposits, soak in some brake cleaner first. Make sure rags are shoved in the lifter areas.

+1 this is the best way, but like said here, just make sure you oil down the cylinders immediately after, and change the oil if the pan is not off of it.
