Older technology lobes. Awesome sound. Lift is pretty low. 232/236 .575/.578 114. I dynoed 383/375 back in the day with 241 heads and longtubes through the muffler. I guess it would make an OK blower or nitrous cam.

I'd pass on it unless you get it for free. I'm much happier with the torquer 2. The old combo link in my sig gives you an idea of what it sounds like.

What did you like about the tqr 2 better? Did you do a cam swap? or add heads and other mods at the same time?

There are even better cams now than the V2 in this size range. But to answer your question, lobe technology. The ramp rates are more aggressive and higher lift with similar duration. It makes a shitload more power. It's a good medium/large cam that's marginally not too big for daily driving.

I basically bought a complete longblock from MTI (out of business) and it was a complete hack job. Spun bearings. So I have a new shortblock. Long story.

I would take advantage of the newer lobe designs. Do a lot of research. Tons of info on this site.

I understand the lobes. You just said you were more happy. I was curious why if you never compared them with similar mod's.

I have the exact same mods. I haven't dyno'd, but assume I'm in the 420/430 range now that it's trapping over 120.

Ok cool thats what I was trying to figure out.

So what did it trap before? Does it feel stouter in the mid-range or just over all more power?

It trapped 115 before. I don't blame it all on the cam, though I'm sure the lift held the car back. The old motor never felt right... like it was sick.
But it's a night and day difference. Like going from a little angry to really pissed off.

I would be curious to see what difference the lift makes on a set of VJ mill worked 241 heads. I run some worked stockers as well.

so you put a cam with .020" more lift and you say that the R1 is low lift? Sure the lobes are a bit lazier but the R1 still makes good power and is fantastic for people that DD, very easy on valvetrain parts. Not to mention the sound is great, back in the day this was the **** and alot of people made alot of power with good times.

If you think the "lift held your car back", a set of 1.8 rockers would put it higher than the torquer. I would look at the 112vs114 LSA and the larger .006" numbers as the reason it would pick up power. The total of these changes is worth about 10-12hp and 5lb-tq

You're probably right. Just my experience and opinion. I still wouldn't recommend it vs. todays cams.
.020 is still .020. Flow charts I looked at from MTI for ported 241 heads @ .600 lift vs .575 suggests you're still leaving some power/cfm on the table. My old dyno showed power falling flat at 6000 rpm. I just assumed this was lift related. Could have been something else, like float, I guess.
It WAS the ****, back in the day. Back in the day, that combo left a bad taste in my mouth. Like I said, the motor was sick. Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on the old R1.

no. Mr gunn. you are correct. there is many more choices for cans and lobes out today. but I wouldn't push that can off either if that was what your looking for.

The R1 cam is ok. I couldn't ever get one to make "impressive" #'s, only mediocre. Unless you were getting it for $100-150, I'd look elsewhere.

What are your thoughts on why? The few dyno graphs I found they seem like the had a fairly wide power band and carried power very well with the ls6 intake.

From what I saw it seemed to work very well with sub par heads and the ls6 intake.

Couldn't really tell ya why to be honest. Maybe the engines I put them in just didn't like the cam.

There's nothing special about it. It's just a Comp XE intake and exhaust lobe.

Here's a good example of this cam making sub-par #'s
