Stealth or Beastmode Cam

Stealth or Beastmode Cam
Good Afternoon all,
I am currently at a crossroads in my current cam selection, I would like to keep a stock(ish) idle to fool my competitors but also want some soul shredding power that only a larger cam could provide. By the choices I have been presented, the Thunder racing TRAK and CHEATR cam, or TSP 228 on a 114. Or should I just do a custom grind .
I would like to keep the stock idle but if I can get very close to 400 rwhp with a slightly larger bumpstick I will do it.
If anybody wants to throw some suggestions at me mods are in my sig...
Thanks again!

A larger duration cam with a wider lsa would probably be what your looking for..... maybe something around a 230/234 .600/.600 on a 116-118 lsa
Wouldn't make as high peak numbers, but would be a long wide torque curve and give you a semi decient idle.

My 228r 114 lsa does NOT idle like stock. It's isn't insane at all either. I'd place it as a mild lope. Marks suggestion would indeed probably be good for power with a very mild idle chop. I'll try to get a sound clip.

I've got a sleeper cam that has made 426/409 thru a 6-speed and 3.42 in a vette with ported heads and stock intake. Idles at 725rpm and sounds like stock thru cats and stock catback, car has been 11.0@124. How high are you willing to spin your car? That will help determine where you want to make power, so the car is fastest down the track. Avg power is what wins races not peak power Give me a call and we can custom grind you something. A cutout would be another option. I have a Borla adjustable CB with an electronic cutout and an MS4 in a 408 running 11.5:1. With it open, you can easily hear the choppy idle and don't get me wrong, it's still there with the cutout closed, but it sounds so much tamer.
This video doesn't really do it the "sleeper-ish" cutout justice, but I get more offers to race with the cutout closed and when driving on the street, I really doubt anyone at the stop light could tell with all the surrounding noise.

It's amazing how much the extra cubes tame down a cam isn't it... had basic the same cam in mine and now going to a 255/263 on a 115 lsa.... I can't wait to finally fire up the 408 again this weekend!

well those will take you in two different areas when it comes to cam selection. So its really up to you to decide.
If you want 400 get a set of heads and a 224/220 on 116 and it will idle like stock and still make good usable power.

Mac Mid Length Headers, Mac offroad y-pipe and Borla adjustable catback for all the videos. It was on the car when I purchased it.

I prefer a beast mode cam, even in my DD (within reason). I went with a Torquer V2 in my 6.0 which ended up being too small though. It has the slightest bit of lope, just enough to shake the car back and forth at idle, but I've had people mistake it for just a shitty running 350TPI until they tried to run it
Stealth on the other hand can be just as much fun, much better driveability most of the time and it has that more "refined" feeling. The power comes on like you would imagine a bmw/mercedes to feel. The bigger cams are more raw and visceral (my preference).

Hard to sound like stock when the car is producing 90-100rwhp more than stock.
I have the TSP 228R on a 114 LSA and it has never been mistaken for stock.
It's really going to depend on your exhaust choice IMO.
If you run shorties/cats/mild cat back it will sound stock-ish.
If you run LT's/ORY/aggressive cat back, it will sound anything but stock.

Thanks to all involved for some good ideas! I think a custom grind will be what I am looking for, perhaps a 230 duration with less than .600 lift and a 116 LSA not make my powerband sky high, I will be purchasing a cam in May as soon as I get my first 11.99 timeslip
But just out of curiosity, what would be the largest cam I could do and keep it stealthy with no cats on my Y pipe? I want as much power possible while having the car still have a stock feeling powerband with perhaps a minimum of shake at idle. Is it even possible to get 400 rwhp through my setup cam only?
Again thanks to all for the surplus of info in this thread, lets keep it coming.

If you don't run cats, its gonna be loud, no matter what.
I think you should just get over the stock powerband and all that and just run a nice cam and be done with it. You will like the performance more than the loss of the "stock" sound!

Like I said, adding 100rwhp and keeping everything sounding stock-ish is really hard. Only way to do that is choke it with an exhaust that will muffle it considerably.
