Default A large moth or horsefly just flew inside my new LS1

Sitting there finishing up a valve spring/pushrod swap and a big moth or horsefly goes right into one of the center oil return drains in the head. **** me.... I can hear it buzzing around from time to time. I'm calling it a night.

Engine is on a stand and I have to swap the pan anyway, but I guess I should take the intake manifold and valley back off too?

Thoughts? Can a moth or horsefly do any potential damage if I can't find it, or will it die and get into the oil in the pan and disintegrate?

EDIT - Yep... a damn horsefly.

But it could be somewhere in the lifter galley? It went in the oil return hole in the head.

Doubt it will harm anything. If it were my engine I'd try to get it out. Blow compressed air in where it flew in.

Million dollar question, does a dead moth sink to the bottom or float on top? Was it big enough to fit through an oil filter? I could go all day lol

At the risk of the oil pump sucking it up i would take the valley back off and attempt to get it out. Probably would want to refrain from using compressed air unless you want to be picking moth ***** out of your motor.

I cant help it

Try using a shop vac with small adapter on the end and sucking it out of there.

I pulled the valve covers again this morning hoping it would have tried to crawl back out. It's impossible to see where it would have gone. Will try the shop vac and see if I can find anything when I swap the pan.

I guess if needle bearings can migrate to the oil pan w/o issue then a moth or horsefly shouldn't be an issue.

No pics of the stupid bug... but here's the LS6/2/3 springs and Smith Brothers restricted pushrods I installed. Lots and lots of pics in the build thread linked in my sig.

241s... it's a 2004 GTO crate motor going into my father's Panoz that I'm rebuilding.

Just wondering how you can tell by looking at them. Did you read the 241 stamp on the back or is there something else on the heads that show it's 241's.

Says 241 right on the head. Plus the exhaust ports are different than 243s.

I can't believe nobody suggested an exterminator.
