Default ls2 timing chain question

hey guys so im gonna be doing a heads and cam swap for my 2000 z28 and have a question, i plan on replacing the stock ls1 chain for the ls2 chain but i see i can either purchase the chain by itself or get the chain and gear combo, do i need to have that gear in order for the ls2 chain to fit on my car or can i just slip in on my stock ls1 timing gear?

Your stock gear should be fine. I replaced mine at 120k and did not replace the gear..haven't had any issues. Some people will tell you to switch them both for peace if mind, but it's not necessary.

my timing gear had noticeable wear at 145k miles, so I replaced the set.

The only reason I know of to replace the gears are 1. You're existing gears have some wear or 2. You are going to run a 4th gen camshaft in which case You need the cam gear so the cam sensor which is located in the timing cover on 4th gens .
