Default Lunati Voodoo crankshaft reluctor wheel laying in box!

I purchased a Lunati Voodoo crankshaft and took it to my machine shop. As soon as they open the box they noticed the reluctor wheel was not on the crankshaft. They said they never seen one that wasn't on already and they had no way to index it and that it needed to go back to Lunati to get put on. Why is this turning out to be such a big deal? Should it have been on already?

No it is left off for proper balancing of the rotating assembly. I had the same thing happen with mine and that was the response I was given by Lunati. Need to buy a $250 tool to index, find a shop that has it already to balance it, to make your own tool based off your original crankshaft and the indexing marks on it.

I got a K1 crank and it had the reluctor wheel on it and my machine shop balanced it with no problem. But I will say Lunati kinda pissed me off when I got their roller rockers and they didnt mention they required studs, girdles, and wont fit under stock valve covers. And then when I called they recommended I put an adapter and run SBC valve covers...yeah right.

Well if he had a reluctor wheel installed on his cam then that would have been bad, maybe that's what he meant...lol

I was going to buy one of these since I thought buying Lunati would be a sure thing for under 700 bucks but now I guess I wont. I guess I will be going with a Callies c-series crank then for a little bit more.

That's a load of bullshit. Every other crank (ie Callies, Eagle, Scat, etc) have the reluctor pre-installed. If that's their reply, I would send that back and get a Callies.

I'm gonna go Callies, but now I have a crank I need to sell! Bought it from Colorado Speed, and there is a 25% restocking fee plus the shipping! WTF

That's pretty normal for performance parts but you can find someone on eBay who doesn't know any better. You are being an honest seller when you list it brand new in box and don't point out that it must be balanced and the reluctor wheel indexed on because that's how Lunati sells all of them.

You're going to spend more money for a crank that is no better at all, simply because you don't want to have the reluctor on.

Your best bet is to just have the reluctor installed after you have the crank balanced. You'll be money ahead that way.

I bought the Lunati Voodoo crank a month ago and it has turned out to be a great buy. I paid $30 to get the reluctor installed. The journals were round and only showed a couple tenths of taper near the fillet. It balanced easily with a lightly dished piston and h beam rod.

Well I'd Mallory has to be added for any reason then the reluctor would need removed. Yeah it's a pita but honestly it makes sense. Plus it was cheaper for them to just pop the reluctor into the box with the crank than peinstalling.

I will keep my Lunati crank, it matches my rods and will easily handle the goals of my build for a far less expense than the next priced crank.

By the way, you can make your own installer by using your original crank shaft with a bit of mechanical ability and a welder. Not for everyone, just those who can.
