Default machine shop sleeved cylinder #7 of my LQ9 without my concent

I pulled the engine a week ago, the piston was shatttered and the rod was broken in half. I decided to take the shortblock to a well known machine shop to see how damaged the block was before I decide what to do with it. So today I just received a call from the machine shop saying they had to sleeve cylinder #7 and they also installed new cam bearings.

The cost was $600 and i still need to look for 1 rod and new pistons. most used LQ9 shortblocks sell for $600-$900 which i could have just bought instead and even junk yard complete engines run about $1200-1400.

What can I do at this point?

This is an issue you need to take up with the shop. I personally would make them split the cost with me and if they refuse, forward it to the police. If anything, they would owe you money for the engine they took it upon themselves to fix, BUT if there is any trace of you giving them consent or permission to work on it, you will lose the case. Sucks it has to come to this but you are at an advantage right now so stop playing mr nice guy.

definitely would get the police involved. they have no business doing unauthorized work especially since it was not in writing. thats their mistake and they need to eat it

The police will tell you that is a civil case, which it is. If the block needed a sleeve, it was presumably worthless without one. So you are pretty much back where you started. I would just walk away.

If you end up paying do it w/ a credit card and dispute it, just my opinion.

I agree, if the block was at that point then it's pretty much worthless and would have had to get something else anyway. Don't pay $600 for a sleeved block, pay $600 for another good one.

its extortion, plain and simple. post the name of the shop and the person(s) that you are dealing with.

I also say post up the name of the shop, may save somebody else some money. Find another block, wouldn't want one with a sleeve myself. This happens a lot, also a lot of shops will give you a estimate, then after the work is done the bill is 4 or 5oo dollars higher. I know you can run into extra stuff that needs addressed, but they make a thing called a phone that they should call you on and inform you of the extra cost. This shop sounds like 1 of them.
