Default Need help Quick - Pulling Motor

I'm pulling the motor from the top. I have every nut and bolt loose, the motor is suspended by the hoist right now, but the life of me I cannot get the transmission to separate from the block. Any advise? Hidden bolts, need a pry bar? Anything? i would rather not attempt to pull the trans with the motor.

make 100 % sure that everybolt is unbolted from the transmission to the motor, a couple hidden ones up top, also before you lift the motor out slide it forward, once all the bolts are loosened you should be able to slide it out without to much trouble, just make sure there are no bolts left and you are not binding the tranny shaft in any way.

There are (8) 15MM bolts that need to be removed.

another thing, likte z28kid said, make sure that the Torque Converter Bolts are out or you wont be able to get them apart either, and a pry bar is needed but shouldnt need much pressure to seperate from dowls.

Well if his sig is correct he doesn't have a TQ converter But if you have all the bellhousing bolts out a little prying and shaking of the tailshaft should free it up.

as already stated the bellhousing just needes a little prying off the block to come loose. i just used a screw driver myself until it was loose enough to get the output shaft free.

how was the pull so far? im going to be pulling my motor in a few weeks.

Thanks for all the help guys. Turns out we had the motor just a little cockeyed. Once we got it straight the tranny and motor came apart with a little effort. The motor is out and on a stand.

$0.02 - don't pull it from the top. I don't know if dropping it from the bottom would be any easier, but from the top sucked so bad I will be re-instaling from the bottom. While I wait for the rest of my parts to arrive, I'll be removing the tranny and k-member in preperation for the bottom install. I think it would take way too long to line everthing up correctly re-installing from the top.

I have 3 ten hour days vested into getting this motor out and will need to replace the head temp sensor and 1 fuel injector plug. This is my first time pulling an LS1 and may be able to do it faster next time, but I don't see how pulling the motor from the top could be done any quicker than 1.5 - 2 days.

No lift just an engine hoist and ramps for the rear tires and it comes out very easy from the bottom took us around 3 hrs on a friends car (His first time) and he helped me do mine and it took us about 2 on mine very easy. I have done it a lot faster with more experiended guys I think it took us an hour or so for the one I am talking about. Good luck with every thing.

damn!!! took me probably 4 hours out the top, but i took the motor all the way down to a shortblock and that helped tremendously. i just wanted to see how badly the pistons were broke up when the rod bolt let loose.

Good luck on the install though!

z28Kid98 - 4 hours? do you do this for a living? **** man, I'd like to know your secrets. How's you luck putting it back in from the top? I've made up my mind to drop the trans and the kmember and install from the bottom, but i'd like to know how you go about it.

I always pull them out from the top (mainly cause I don't have a lift in my garage ) I just spent 3 hours tonight getting one ready to pull.. 4 tranny crossmember bolts and the two motor mount bolts left and it's ready to come out. This last stage usually takes me about 15 minutes going slowly.

I also always pull the tranny out along with it. If you do it once or twice from the top, you'll find it's easier to keep them attached.

If I had a lift, I'd take em out from the bottom every time, though.

Guys I will send you all pic some one here at work has the disc and they are not fessing up so I will have to make another copy or send them from home sorry it is taking me so long but I have asked everyone here I brought them to work to show my coworkers and I belive some one took them home or something to show another friend ETC... So maybe tomorrow when I get up I'll send them to you guys It is very simple to do with an engine hoist and rams or something to raise the rear up @10 inches on each wheel as you would want something stable ETC...
