Default Summit 8707(r1) vs 8708(r1)

Thoughts on these 2 cams vs ea other (performance, drivability, etc) for a

Iron 6.0 in 4th gen
ls2 internals
ported 243’s
fast 102/102
1 7/8 tsp headers
3” exhaust
6060 trans
3.73’s

I don’t want to end up in a situation where the smaller cam would actually be quicker than the bigger one.

I’m thinking the events are better suited to the 6.0 in the larger sized cam though.

8707 specs 226/238, 113+3, 6* overlap

8708 specs 232/242, 113+3, 11* overlap

2002 camaro
6060 trans
3.73 rear

mostly an all around fun car. More hpde and autoX than drag though. Not really into drag racing.
not a dedicated daily driver, but probably 2x a week drive to work car, and weekends car

Heads aren’t an exact known cc, but I’m betting they are 65 (tsp stg 2.5). Could be milled smaller, but this would be the largest they’d normally cc. I’ll verify if any milling was done when they get pulled.

compression calculation with a .045 gasket, flat tops, std .006 out of the hole, comes up at 11.175

and both cams Ivc points puts the dynamic at 8.692 vs 8.47

@bthomas,

We would put the SUM-8707R1 in this and run it. It will have a steady lope but tunes well and is easy to live with. It has a nice wide powerband which will serve you well for the HPDE and AutoX events. Pair it with some .600" lift beehives or upgrade to .660" lift duals and it will be happy out to 7,000+.

I have the 8707 in my 6.0 in my Chevelle with a t56 and 3.73s. IT has 799 heads with Manley valves and stock truck intake and TB. It’ll light the tires 1st and 2nd gear. Great behavior when cruising, definitely needs low speed tuning with a stick shift but a great cam.

I personally like the 8708 cam better, but I like to rev my engines higher than most people.

I wouldn't call myself a cam expert, but the 8708 should make more top end power and carry it further. It will be faster if you drive the car accordingly. The 8707 will probably make more power in the mid range, and I could see it being a little bit easier to drive quickly at an AutoX event.

I don't think you'll be unhappy with either cam though.

I ran a 8708 in a 5.3. It was a top end cam in that size engine and was real easy to get the tune right.

Right now I'm running a LS2 with the 8706 cam, which is the turbo version of the 8707 I picked this for the increase in low end it claims to have.
It pulls nice from 3500 up, was a pain to get the tune right.
