Default TR220 passed CA emissions...barely

This was a close one.

Took the 98 in for a smog check this morning for registration renewal. Little worried about the visual and the sniffer. After 10 long minutes the tech said I passed.

Mods are:

TR220 114LSA
TTS LTs w/cats
LS6 intake
Lid
Dual/Dual
Dyno tuned

What has me concerned are the hydrocarbons.
HCs Max. Meas.
15mph 51 47
25mph 35 30

CO and NO readings were well within limits. I had entertained the idea of adding some AFR heads to the above combo but now I am not so sure. Would heads affect emissions by much, especially if I bump up the compression ratio some?

High HCs I'm thinking are due to a rich condition. Maybe I need to have the tune redone, fan settings returned to stock, and see what happens. Car was driven for a good hour prior to testing. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks,
Brian

Firebaby,

I have no idea what the exact CO (I assume you mean CO and not CO2) and HC numbers would be for cars straight from the factory as I'm sure each car would be a little different. GM does have to meet certain federal EPA emission standards or else they couldn't sell the cars.

I can tell you that my measured CO and HC numbers when the only mods were a lid and the factory dual/dual were 0 ppm for both. I believe these cars are considered Low Emission Vehicles (when stock ).

Brian,
I'm thinking that your close call could be related to the condition of the CATS and/or their location. My car has a 220º/220º 112º+4º and passed easily.
The HC's were 20@15mph and 8@25mph. CO was measured at .02@15mph and .03@25mph. The measured NO was way below the average. The car had factory exhaust manifolds and CATS and that may account for the bulk of the difference. CAT performance can vary from each manufacturer and the closer they're located to the heads the better the efficiency.

Good luck,

Richard

HC comes from misfires, which can be from lean or
rich or the constant swinging from lean to rich that
the PCM makes happen, coupled with low catalyst
efficiency (low heat, or just high flow by increasing
passage and decreasing involved surface area).

If it's the swing action traveling too far then there
are tuning things you can do with the proportional
fuel stuff to tighten that up and probably drive HC
down. Also keeping your O2s good and hot helps
all of this. But, hey, you've got a year to worry
about that.

How did you pass California visual with long tubes,
anyway?

Thanks for the responses.

Richard, I'm inclined to think that it might be the CATS also. They are the TTS supplied CATS and have about 7500 miles on them. Even for aftermarket CATS I would think they would still have some life left.

Jimmyblue, I might have Jeff Creech from CAM take a look at the tune the next time he comes out this way and see what he finds. I know that I will probably return the cooling fans to the stock settings. BTW, the PCM was tuned by Mike Morgan last year.

As far as passing visual, the tech obviously didn't know what he was looking at. He didn't even ask about them. Like some have said in the past, maybe he was one that didn't care as long as CATS were on the car.

I got a cam, LT's, ORY, no cats, and a cutout with magnaflow. I just keep it below 2500 and I don't get harrassed either. Cali REALLY is a smog **** state though

the AFR heads should not have an effect on your cars emissions.
