Default Please help me decide 112 lsa vs 114 for big S1 cam for my MTI 427 LQ4

Car arrives at MTI tommorrow and engine should be going in over the next couple of weeks for my MTI 427 LQ4 utilizing MTIs stage III LS6 heads. I am going with the biggest hyd. cam they offer the S1 with specs of 244/244, .612 lift and ll2lsa. My 98 C5 has a 4000 Yank Prothruster and 3.73s gears and it has FLP Level IV tranny. There is still time for me to go with S1 cam on a 114lsa.

I want to make max power but do not want to have to two foot the car upon cold starts and at stop lites, etc. The car is not a daily driver but a weekend warrior/hobby. I am bulding the car so that it can get the best 1/4 mile times possible and looking for consistent high 10s with Hoosier slicks. Will the 112 lsa with MTIs prof. tuning be adequate through my A4 or do you think i will have a hard time idling at times and have to two foot, etc. And if go with the 114 will it hurt my 1/4 mile ets?

What would you guys do on the 112 vs. 114lsa for the S1 cam for my set up. Of course I have talked to Jayson at MTI about this but want the feedback of my fellow hardcore LS1 performance nuts here.

Thanks,

MTI 427 C5 Roadster <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I have learned time and time again that if you are into performance and get talked down into something a little tamer because you will like it better on the street, you eventually go for the bigger stuff. I would recommend the 112 LSA - MTI can tune that for you well enough to where it isn't a royal pain, but you may still have to "double foot it" sometimes when the engine is cold.

Surprised that you didn't go solid roller, but I can understand if close access to someone who can do the valve lash adjustments would be a pain. The S1 cam looks positively small to me given what I am getting shortly.

My goal was to build a strong street car which would remain reasonably civilized. I've pretty much gotten that, though the car's idle characteristics remain somewhat problematic despite lots of time tuning: rpms hang slightly before drifting to idle when stopped, a short period of fast idling occurs after restarting the car when warm, and so forth. I suspect I can get rid of some of this with a bit more tuning, but others here have had similar issues with their well sorted out cars (see a recent comment from Colonel in another thread, for example). I would suspect that a 112 cam would be even more difficult to get right. I think you should decide how much hassle you're willing to tolerate to achieve incremental benefits, and then make your decision accordingly.

Just out of curiousity will I have this problem with an M6 (two footing that is)? I am going to have a .240/.240 .609/.609 on a 112lsa and it is going to be X-ER lobes. I thought that would make it a little more streetable. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

I guess I will find out within a couple of weeks.
BTW, MTI 427 when you speak to Jayson again tell him that all I'm waiting on is to get my stage III LS6 heads back from him and I'll be ready to go. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />

Your is a M6, so you may just have to give it some gas on a cold start, and maybe heel and toe it if you have to use the brakes to prevent a stall.

On an engine as large as yours, I don't think that mid range punch is going to be an issue. By getting a cam with less overlap, you will have more vacuum, and as follows, a smoother idle, snappier throttle response, and generally better low-end. It will kill a little mid-range, but it should give you more top-end hp. Just my $.02

Is this idle issue more problematic on the larger displacement motors, as opposed to stock?

I'm debating an mti X1 with a 112 or 114 for a stock ci/stock head ls6. I'd sure hate to give up a bunch of (much needed) mid range tq if the problem isn't that bad around town (M6).

I think it's safe to say that Jayson is a "hardcore LS1 performance nut"!

HITMAN/Anyone else:

Alse else being equal, which lsa gives me the better 1/4 mile et with the S1 cam and my application. The 112lsa or 114lsa.

Keep in mind my bore is only 4.060 with huge stroke with my 4.125 crank (so should being making gobs of low end torque irregardless of what lsa i choose).

Just wondering for my application whether the 112 or 114 S1 cam (244/244; .612 lift) will outperform the other in the 1/4 mile. Or will the difference be so negligible it won't really mnatter in a drag race on a sanctioned track?

THanks, MTI 427 C5 Roadster

Roadster - 112 LSA should perform a little better at the track given your application. I would still say to go with it.

I'd still give the nod to the 114 to try to give yourself the maximum hp, but really, this is still a small cam in the whole scheme of things, so it's not like you have to worry about overcamming it. I just think that the 114 will give you the broadest powerband. IMHO

Guys, i think you misunderstood me when i said that "I talked to Jayson at MTI but wanted to get the opinion of my fellow LS1 performance nuts HERE." Emphasis on the word "HERE" meaning HERE-On this particular forum LS1tech.com. I myself, have never seen JAYSON reply in these posts on this forum and if he does, that is news to me.

Don't get me wrong, i respect and values Jayson's opinion for my build more than any other person,as he is my engine builder and i wouldn't be making this huge investment with MTI if i didn't think he was best, and yes i think he is a LS1 performance nut. However, I like getting as much info as possible, as it helps me in making big decisions for my DREAM 427 LS1 MOTOR (which i am making a rather large $investment in), not to say that i don't respect and appreciate the opinions of all others who have taken their valued time to respond to my post "HERE" (on LS1tech.com) As the old expression goes, 2 heads is better than 1 and of course 10 heads is better than 2, etc.

That having been said, i would like to see what 7 lITERS recommends for my build. What cam are you running in your MTI 422? If its the S1, is it on a 112lsa and if yes, do you recommend this cam and is your car a manual tranny or auto?

Thanks Gentleman or any female, LS1 performance nuts that may be out there! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Just go with the 114lsa.It sounds like more of a street car so 114 is the way to go.If you were more of a hardcore track guy then yeah 112 but you want better idle so 114.Problem solved.Trust me with what you have for the car or plan on doing to it it will hit 10's with either or.

I guess i should not have posted that. Didn't mean for you to have to explain yourself. I was just giving Jayson his dues. I'm running 114ls, and my car is a 6 speed. No issues with idle or drivability. When the engine's cold I let it idle for a minute or so before taking off. My car is driven a lot. When i picked it up I drove it from Houston to San Antonio. I've also taken it to work from San Antonio to Austin a few times since my beater broke down. It all comes down to what you want. I agree with WeatherGuy though! Mayhaps you can find some one local who has a 422+ LS1/auto/S1 combo. Ride or drive the car and make your decision.

I just got back from the CES show in Vegas and averaged 21 mpg cruising at 80 - 110 mph with the converter locked in OD with only a handful of WOT to show a BMW M3 to not mess with me! I don't know how much you will go to the track but if you mostly drive on the street and only see 2500-3500 rpms you may be better off with the milder cam. BTW I only 2-foot it on cold starts. My engine has never stalled at a stop light cause it's idling at 1100 rpms. IMO a street superstroker's blast to drive on the street comes not from rpms but the massive flat torque curve, and driven 99%in the mid range rpms. So unless you go to the track often, you will have very little use of the high rpms.

I never have to 2 foot my 422ci (S1 242/112) camm'd setup... We even removed one of the idle holes in the TB and just have one now...

Thanks for the reply 7-liter and no problem on me having to explain, etc.

Are you running the S1 cam in your 422 or the R1 cam?

What numbers did you pull on MTI's dyno if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks,

I'm running the S1. With the R1 it dynoed 505 with cutout open. Now i switched to LS6 heads. Jayson tuned it for the bottle this time and it dynoed 495 with cutouts closed. I'm thinking with cutouts open i should be in the 515-525 rwhp range. I have to drop off the car at MTI on Friday for a photoshoot with GMHTP so I'll get it dynoed again with open exhaust and the bottle.
