Default Comp 218/224 .527/.534 114 vs. Hotcam

I have been looking at the Hotcam (I know many people here despise that cam) but don't want anything too big. I also want to keep things reasonable so I don't have to deal with spring changes. Comp has a similar cam as the hotcam and it might have a better idle and possibly be better on emissions. Wondering if anyone has experience with both or can provide some feedback on the comparison of these two cams. I am looking for streetable torque with some upper end so peak HP is not my goal here.

The Comp cam will idle much better than the hotcam and should pass emissions with good tuning.

Vettenuts look at the crane grinds, specifically the 216/224 with .551 lift. Have this cam in my vette with 1.8 crane rockers and it runs great and idles @650 in gear.

There are two versions, which are you running (LSA?)

How is the low end? This is one of the Crane cams that I was looking at but information seems to be lacking on many of the Crane grinds.

with the Hotcam you will have to change the springs. Well you don't "have to do anything" but I would highly recommend it. Good luck.

I think he means frequent spring changes from aggressive ramp high lift, not changing them to begin with.

I've been looking at the Crane 216/224 .551/.551, mainly because of 1500 min rpm. I've also been looking at the Comp Cams XR265HR (212/218 .538/.563 115). How do these compare in power curve to something like SLP's 220/220 .5??/.5??; what's the reason for equal duration vs longer exhaust duration for power? Also, given two cams of equal duration and lift, what does a lower or higher LSA do to the power curve? Is it the lower LSA, the rougher the idle and higher the power curve shifts?

Here's what I have so far: 2K LS1 w/stock cam and heads, SLP cai & lid, 85mm MAF, 160stat, SLP hf cats and LTs, Loudmouth, and SLP Predator tune. The dyno (Mustang) run with mods but before tune was 308 MP @ 5250/324 MT @ 4500; after the tune it ran 335 MP @ 5500/345 MT @ 4750 (so if you're debating whether to get a tuner, the Predator was well worth it). The power curve seems noticeably higher, but there's still plenty of torque if I give it a little more partial throttle than before. At WOT is screams, and pulls strong all the way to red line, in fact it really starts cranking at about 3-4 grand. It just keeps going and going and going... I can't wait to get it to the track. OK, If I choose a cam because of the lower min rpm (say 1500) given that the power curve has already bumped up, am I being dumb and mis-matching the cam and tune? Might it be that with the LTs and Loudmouth, that I'm missing some back pressure; I do have high flow cats after the headers... How will the car respond to the new cam given the Predator tune? I want it to still be streetable, but I have the M6, so that makes it a lot easier.

Thanks... obviously I've been reading a lot lately, but need help putting it together...

in my A4 car, the hotcam made 365 rwhp and 362 lbft torque through stock 98 heads, stock stall, stock gear, and an LS1 intake. not bad for an "outdated" cam i dont think.

I Got The Xr265hr Cam And You Can Barely Hear It And I Hate It. I Wish I Would Have Gotten A Bigger Cam. I Just Like To Hear It. It Performs Pretty Good. Also Still Have Stock Springs. Over 10000 Miles.

i didnt think you were, just defending what i think is a great cam. one of my friends has an 02 m6 camaro, with pacesetters LT's, ORY, cutout, airlid, and the hotcam and made 375 at the rear wheels on a superflow dyno, which is the same one i dynoed on. the hotcam still makes good power. he went 12.0 @115 mph in the quarter, and he is the worst granny shifter in the world.
