Default loud ticking noise what is it?

i was driving the other day and i remember having to downshift while going about 55, a random basketball came rolling out in the middle of the road so i had to stop fast, so i downshifted into 2nd while braking and a few minutes later i was at the gas station and i started up my car and right away there was a very loud ticking noise which sounds like its comming from the passenger side head on the very front of it almost by the pullies, it will go away after about 10 seconds or after a couple smalls revs to about 2000 rpm, i only hear it when i start it up, with the motor being hot or cold, the internals of my motor are all stock...i have been spraying it this year ive gone through 7 bottles on a 150 shot, i am guessing i broke a valve spring? what would be your guess?

You should be able to tell if its a pulley, how loud is the ticking?
Any codes?

It could be a slightly bent pushrod, too.

Pull the coilpacks and valve covers, and pull your pushrods. I just had the same problem. Stock pushrods=teh suck.

Yeah, I have bent my fair share of factory push-rods. They may be "teh suck", but I'd much rather them bend then having the shock go further into the engine and have to replace valves and all that awesome stuff.

I'd check out your pushrods, those tend to always lead to a nice little tick.

So agreed. I've had to pull my pushrods 2x now and check and each time had to replace 4 pushrods. First time I made the mistake of trying to 3-2 at WOT . This last time I blame partly on myself and partly on my worn out clutch. Been on the car pretty heavily for a good 15 minutes of play time on the interstate, and went to hit 4th gear and wouldn't you believe the clutch didn't engage right and it free spun to the rev limiter and bend 4 pushrods.

They may be weak, but they will definately prevent further damage by bending...

Wink

Its most likely those factory pushrods, I had bent mine up like banana's when I first got this car six years ago. Went with comp cams hardened rods, no problems ever since.

If you do plan on going with hardened push-rods, please promise that you won't miss a shift
