I'm a lil uneducated in this, so just wondering why the need for such thick oil for a forged motor

Big motors run hot. hot motors thin oil. thin oil can cause problems. better safe then sorry.

Also alot of rebuilt motors run a little looser clearances on the bearings, thicker oil keeps the pressure up.

10W40 right now, switching to 20W50 after break in.

Yes sir. you are right about that
I have the factory Clearances
I use Napa Full Synthitic 5w30. Its made from valvoline and its $4.75 a Qrt.
