Default Fast Toys ram air worth it?

Just got my 2002 Formula and I purchasing a whipser lid and K&N filter, getting the small things covered. They claim 2 tenths and 1.5-2.0 MPH over the factory ram air and free ram air. Anyone with personal experience? Was wondering if I fast toys ram air system is worth it? Thanks in advance for the info.

Its definitely worth a .1 and 1 - 2 mph on Z28 and an unmodified formula. However, on a formula you can open up the nostrils in your bird and raise the airbox a bit (free mods ), although the gain will be a bit less.

Yep, a good bang for the buck mod. Be sure to also do with this a 160 thermostat (or at least a 180) and fan settings to match.

I was looking at my owners manual a couple of
nights ago, and it says the thermostat that comes
in the car is a 180 degree thermostat.I put a 160
in it over the summer and it only ran about 3-5
degrees cooler.it usually runs 205 - 210 degrees
with either in it.
My car is a 2001,did they change it or was it
always 180 stock?
I also noticed when I leave the manual fans on
I run 1 mph and 1-2 tenths slower.I guess those
fans take alot of juice.

Thanks for the info. I will put it on my list of mods.
If I get the 160 thermo is there any other way to adjust the fan settings other than the HPP3? I have been told that a descreen MAF and HPP3 could lean out my car too much.

Yep, you gotta have those fans agoin' to see the full benefit of a cooler thermostat.

Different years came with different thermostats. My '00 came with a 190 I believe.

You can use a manual fan switch instead of an HPP3 and I believe there are also other thermostatic switches available.

The HPP3 will only lean the mixture if you install it's "power tuning." You could change the fan settings without installing the tuning.

I am using the Fast Toys kit and really think it is a great mod, especially if you haven't done the free-ram air mod yet. Whisper lid, FTRA kit, and a descreened MAF are great first mods.

After this, I would look into either a cutout or a catback. A 160* thermo and a hpp3 (especially if you have an automatic) would be next on my list.

I go to LSU as well (2nd year, Mech. Engineering). If you have any questions or need help installing anything, shoot me an email. I would be more happy to help.

I am looking to get the most bang for my buck, in college and money is tight. The 160 Thermo is fairly cheap. However, that HPP3 is fairly pricey. Can I just borrow someones to adjust my fan settings, $400 just to do that is a lot. I am not sure how the HPP3 works, does it have to be plugged in at all times for the new settings to work?

I noticed a big difference in throttle response with my Fasttoys kit. No Form4Speed, the HPP3 is VIN coded and will only work on one VIN# unless you have it sent back to Hypertech and have them erase the memory. But they're not going to do that.

It doesn't have to be plugged in for it to work, but you can only program one car at a time.
So if you were to borrow a friends HPP3, you wouldn't be able to program YOUR car untill your friend UNPROGRAMMED his.

Or you could do the fan mod for about 10 bucks. That's what I plan on doing since I sold my HHP3. Go to LS1.com and look under the mods section. They have instructions on how to do the fan mod yourself.
