Default Wassup! Chambered exhaust question....

Hey folks...I am a new Camaro owner and don't know a lot about exhaust systems. So could anyone please tell me what a "chambered" exhaust set-up is, and what are it's advantages?
How does it sound versus a dual set up, single split exhaust set up? How much hp gained?

I think the
"Intimidator SS" has it...does anyone else? Thanks

Well I have a GMMG Chambered Exhaust on my 99 WS6 which is otherwise stock. It really woke the car up, I was suprised It is stronger from off idle all the way to redline, but from about 5000 up it didn't flatten out like the car did with the stock exhaust (it keeps pulling till the rev limiter).

The sound is just amazing. Old muscle-car sound and has a snarl between shifts (as you let off the gas).

I don't think there has been any proof that this exhaust is any more restrictive than some of the others in a higher hp car (400rwhp). I don't believe it can compete with a wide open borla or 4" mufflex but it can probably hold its own with other comparable exhausts.

There were two guys here who dynoed before/after with lightly modded cars and lost around 3-4 rwhp between the cutout being capped/uncapped with this exhaust. Do a search on GMMG exhaust - that post is still here I'm sure.

I have read from others that it will not do well in high hp cars (around 400rwhp), but I have not read any proof to back this up!

Hope this helps.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

That's the info. I've been looking for! Yeah, I heard that Borlas are very good but also very expensive. I have a Flowmaster on my '98 Z28 and its pretty loud.

I'm a Camaro owner on a budget, so no mods here! Also, I'm sort of an old fashioned owner because I like original parts. No new rims, no free ram air, nothing! How's that for odd?

No problem. Don't get me wrong Borla is a nice exhaust though, just a little raspy for my tastes.

As far as expensive, the GMMG exhaust is also quite pricey.

Maybe I can help some too!

I've actually had Borla, SLP Loudmouth, & now the GMMG Chambered Exhaust.

Results:

I clearly like the GMMG the best. Borla is ok but a little raspy and can be high-pitched sounding. The SLP LM is unrefined(sounds like a garbarge truck to me) and is also a little raspy and high-pitched. The GMMG is deeper than both, especially the Borla and it does not get raspy either. As for performance, I would say the GMMG and Borla seemed very comparable on my car at all rpms while the SLP LM made my car feel somewhat sluggish down low. The only complaint I have with the GMMG is that it is starting to cause some irratating interior noise(rear window is vibrating a lot), but I'm unsure if this problem is related to the very cold weather were having here in Chicago.

I'd say get the GMMG but you can't exactly go wrong with the Borla. If you want the SLP LM, then just get a cutout because that is what it sounds like.

Good luck,

Mike

Thanks a lot Mike! I guess it always pays to ask if you don't know something!
That info. really helps me understand the differences in systems. And again, Borla always comes out as a possible choice. GMMG is now something I would consider though probably not for a while since my Flowmaster seems to be doing fine.
And it's cool to see how diff. systems have diff. sounds. I use chrome slash tips on my Flows and the sound is really low and loud!
Thanx again

Your welcome Alan.

Three other points though:

Don't assume the interior noise that I'm talking about is actually related to the exhaust. I'm still in the process of trying to find that out.

Also, if you think your Flowmaster is loud, the GMMG is a lot louder than the Flowmaster. To me, Flowmaster is only a little louder than stock on LS1's. The GMMG is WAY louder!(Sounds great though)

And if your also considering the Borla I would just spend about that same amount of money on the GMMG instead. Looks better, definitely sounds better, and it performs just as good. Not to mention everybody has Borla.

I'm glad I helped you out some.

Mike

Good stuff...yeah, it seems a lot of owners love Borla. But I was wondering if you might know what type of warranty the GMMGs have? I read in a magazine that Borlas come with a million mile warranty but that may not be true for all models.

Definately more food for thought, and I hope you find out what's causing that rattling. Nothing worse then some unwanted sounds getting in the way of the thunder down under!

Thanks again
