Well I will be installing new heads/cam on my car in the next couple of weeks and it has been suggested that I get a new oil pump. What are the indicators that my oil pump is going out?? I have a '98 Z28 (A4) with 68,000 miles. My car has been cosuming quite a bit of oil and about 2 months ago I put in a new PCV valve. not sure if that fixed it or not but will be changing the oil out after the heads/cam install. I called a local chevy dealership and was quoted 75 for a GM replacement pump. The funny thing was that the part number was the same for '98-'02!!! i have heard that '98's had some problems with bad oil pumps but the newer models dont... well if they have the same part number, why the difference!!?!? And what does piston slap sound like, have not really ever noticed any sounds but that does not mean that i dont have it...

When your oil pump fails you'll have little or no warning. I don't think oil consumption is one of the symptoms. When my first failed in Dec '00, pressure dropped from 43 at idle to about 20 then would come back up after a few seconds. When it failed, I just had no pressure on startup.
For oil consumption, there's a new GM PCV valve that doesn't have a valve in it just a smaller orifice. If that doesn't help it could be rings or valve seals.
EDIT: My car had some piston slap the winter before last and it sounded like a diesel engine for a few seconds. It did this when I first put a load on the engine after starting.

IMO a modded oil pump is a no brainer for your car based on the new mods and the fact that you have a lot of miles on the car.

i just listened to a sound clip of piston slap and i dont think that i have that. As for the oil pump, i have already put the new pcv valve in about 2 months ago... i did notice before that when i started running low on oil, my oil pressure would decrease when i stepped on the gas... but when there was enough oil in the car it ran normal.... is the aftermarket pump worth an extra 50-60 bucks??

DEFINITELY get an upgraded pump, especially before you add your bolt-ons. I am rebuilding my bottom end (going forged internals) after a rod started knocking days after the install. If you don't get the upgraded, buy a new factory one and hit the little piston with some emory cloth to give it some extra clearance. That is supposed to help it keep from sticking (common cause of failure on those babys)

Tommy - I'd definitely upgrade oil pumps. It's just cheap insurance while you have the engine apart. As for piston slap, I should've let you listen to my car while I had it in Lubbock. It sounds like I have forged pistons on cold starts! It goes away once it's up to temp, so it's no big deal. Your oil consumption might be from your rings. How many bottles of N2O did you run through it?

Well Trevor I've had nitrous for almost 3 years and maybe been through 3 bottles!!! It was suggested to me that it could be my valve guides that are causing me to consume oil.... my car seems to hold the pressure around 40 when there is oil in it.. but when i start running low, the pressure will drop when i step on it... Where is the best place to get an aftermarket oil pump?? i have been to a handfull of the sponsors websites and cannot find an oil pump on any of them!!!

When your valve guide seals go bad, you'll typically only experience smoking on start-ups. The valve guide seals started leaking on my T/A when I had the CNC heads, and it would smoke like a train on startup. Once it was running it was fine. The oil in the top of the head would get past the seal and accumulate on the top of the piston. Fire it up, and the engine burns off the oil that's accumulated on top of the piston. How much oil is your car consuming, and how many miles does it typically take to burn this amount? If it's enough for you to get a low oil light, then I wouldn't expect it to be your guide seals.
As for the modified pumps, I ran ARE's on my 383. It was great! I held ~45 psi at full operating temp, and I saw 70 psi at WOT. FWIW, I never see below 40 psi on my SS, and it also holds ~70 psi at WOT.

i probably burn around 3-4 quarts every 3000 miles!! at least!! The last time i got an oil change, Wal-Mart made me sign a slip so i dont hold them responsible since i was totally out of oil!!!! at that was at 3000 miles.. and i always use mobil 1 synthetic...

XTREME, I had the same problem with oil consumption and totally fixed by going with 10w 40 REGULAR oil. Not sure why the synthetic was going through the motor, but it did. No oil leaked under the car. Haven't had the problem since..........

Well i will keep that in mind.. i have bought a new oil pump and when we install the heads and cam, we will hopefully be able to see what was at fault. if nothing appears wrong, then i may just go with regular oil instead of mobil 1...

Get an oil pump. I got an ARE and stuck it on. I am no longer paranoid everytime I start my car.
Have you thought about trying Valvoline Syn Power? I made the switch. I can say on a friends car, it helped oil comsumption.
