Default black oiley build up in intake ports on heads?

is a black oiley buildup on intake ports of heads normal for a car with 30k on it?

Only half of the port is covered in it.

Completely normal. LS1 engines have the most suck-*** PCV system known to the world. Set up a catch-can inline on the PCV system next time and it should help out alot.

If you think your ports look bad, try pulling your heads --- you will find that the tops of your pistons and your combustion chambers are covered with carbon deposits, caused by oil contamination.

You can try cleaning the engine w/ GM Top Engine Cleaner, Sea Foam, etc. ---- but chances are it won't do much good. Your best bet is to use the aerosol version of the GM product, & spray it into the spark plug holes, let it sit for 8 hours or so, then replace the plugs & start it up. It will smoke like crazy for a few minutes, then clear up. Be sure to change yur oil afterwards --- it will look really nasty.

You are probably using a quart or more of oil per 5K miles, and getting some pinging & knock retard.

The catch can solution works very well. Also, switching to 10W40 oil will reduce consumption.

What is this catch can?
I've been wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to the PCV problem? I know the Neon's have an make-up air tube restrictor that solves the same problem. Anyone try something like that on the ls1?

The "catch can" is just a small container, smaller than an oil filter, w/ a hose inlet on one side of the top of the can, and an outlet on the other side. You run the PCV line into it, & if there is any oil mixed in with the air, it will fall to the bottom of the can instead of getting sucked into the intake.

The "Greddy" can is the one you hear about most often. Some guys also use an in-line fuel filter plumbed into the PCV line. That way you can see right away whether any oil is being trapped, but then you may have to clean or change the filter regularly.
