fireball what made you change? just wondering. i have thought about running M1 20W50 but have heard because of the tight tollerences of the LS1 motor i could starve the motor of oil.

and TB-you never will cease to amaze me!

very very true! maybe i am just listening to the "oil god" patman too much! i have 56K miles and turn this motor to 6800 all the time. i think the 20W50 mobile one (since it is a thiner oil) will be a good thing for my bearings.

any other thought?

I think you should try some royal purple 10w30 sucka! They even have 10w-40, 15w-40 and 20w-50 if you need it...I'd say you would be good with 10w-30. I know a place that can get it for ya. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

The idea is to find an oil that also has a good antiwear additive, so that if you shear back the base oil under high rpms, the antiwear additives are there to protect it. That's why I like oils with moly, as that moly provides that protection.

You might also want something a tad thicker, but not too thick. That's why I say 15w40 is a nice viscosity for very hard use in hot weather. Schaeffers makes a 15w40, and I think Redline might, although their 10w40 will work well.

Patman (or any other oil experts), is Amsoil the best oil, or is it all hype? I have a friend that claims that Amsoil will not break down like all the other oils. For that matter, he says that it will keep on protecting from wear for 20,000+ miles. What's the truth behind Amsoil?

Thanks <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Amsoil is a very good oil but I wouldn't say it's the best. It doesn't have the same antiwear additives like Redline for instance, and comparison tests between used Redline and used Amsoil show that Redline produces less engine wear.

Amsoil's claims to go 25k are a bit far fetched. It can go that far in a perfect engine under perfect driving conditions, but not many cars fall under that category. You can't just put an oil in that long without doing oil analysis either. One Amsoil dealer I know can only run his Amsoil to about 12k, as he finds he gets too much silicon in his analysis at that point (this is due to him living in a dusty area, and his air filter might not be quite as good either)

Amsoil is designed for long intervals though, with a strong detergent package and a good strong base oil. It won't lose viscosity as fast as "off the shelf" oils will, and it's TBN remains strong for longer periods too. My biggest beef with Amsoil is the way they sell it, through multi level marketing. I have found that a lot of Amsoil dealers don't know too much about oil either, which is why they always claim Amsoil is the best there is. I personally think Redline is better and I know that Schaeffers blends have shown analysis results similar to or better than Amsoil, and at half the price per quart too.

Thanks oil Gods <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

I'll try and decide between Amsoil and Redline. Although, I think I'm leaning towards Redline.

Thanks

All this hype about all these "magical" oil's is horse caca IMO...High perfomance motors have been around a lot longer than some of the mystery oils, and been doing just fine without them. There are several 300K+ mile SBC's running around from the 60's that have never seen a drop of fancy Royal Purple or Redline...

Unless you're running 20,000 rpm's in an Indy car, you will never see the difference or SLIGHT if any benefit from these fancier oils. The only change you will see is a slimmer wallet...

I have had 4 F-bodies, all have seen Valvoline and I have never had a problem or complaint. Stay away from Quaker, other cheapo brands, and you'll be just fine. Also make sure you're running the proper weight compared to your mileage or mods.

Josh is partially right, the cheaper oils are a lot closer in quality to the expensive ones now, however there is a difference that can be seen in oil analysis. It's just nice to get that tiny bit of extra protection, however small it may be. Like I said earlier, the difference is in the additive pack, the higher quality oils like Redline have a better package.
